The 'Scam' of Generosity
Lewis Pullman, a 23-year-old Australian travel content creator known for hitchhiking globally, shared an Instagram video on April 16th, initially titled
'Northeast is full of scams,' specifically calling Meghalaya an 'absolute scamming state.' He detailed three significant 'scams' he encountered during his three-week journey. However, it soon became apparent that his use of the word 'scam' was entirely tongue-in-cheek, intended as a humorous tribute to the exceptionally warm and unexpected hospitality he received, which far surpassed typical tourist interactions. This playful misdirection set the stage for a narrative that celebrated, rather than criticized, the local culture and its people's generosity.
Refused Payment Encounter
One of Lewis's most striking 'scams' involved a trekking guide. After agreeing on a fee of ₹2,000 for a seven-hour trek, the guide went above and beyond. Not only did he dedicate the entire day to Lewis, but he also extended a personal invitation to his family home for dinner. The true 'scam,' as Lewis humorously put it, occurred when it was time to settle the payment. Despite Lewis's attempts to hand over the agreed-upon cash, the guide steadfastly refused to accept any money, leaving Lewis bewildered by this act of profound generosity that defied conventional transactional expectations.
The Multi-Day Welcome
Another 'scam' unfolded while Lewis was hitchhiking. A casual invitation for a cup of tea with a couple he met quickly escalated into an unexpected, multi-day stay. What was intended as a brief respite turned into a three-day immersion in their home. During this time, Lewis was treated to an array of incredibly delicious meals and provided with a comfortable bed for two nights. The couple's warm embrace and hospitality were so overwhelming that it took them three days to finally let him continue his journey, highlighting an almost 'captive' but utterly delightful experience of local kindness.
Effortless Travel Woes
Lewis's final 'complaint' was perhaps the most ironic: the sheer ease of hitchhiking in Meghalaya. He expressed mock frustration that he could 'can't even get any time in my own thoughts' or 'struggle' because the very first vehicle passing by would invariably stop to offer him a ride. This 'scam' was the impossibility of experiencing hardship or the typical challenges associated with hitchhiking, as the local community's ingrained helpfulness ensured that he was always quickly and willingly assisted. This constant support, while convenient, ironically disrupted his desired solo travel experience.
Heartfelt Gratitude
Despite the provocative title of his video, Lewis's true sentiments for Meghalaya were overwhelmingly positive, as he explicitly stated in his caption, calling it 'high on my favourites list!' He lauded the region for offering 'some of the best hospitality I’ve ever experienced.' The video concluded with a beaming Lewis declaring, 'Meghalaya, you're bloody unreal. I love it. I love you.' This heartfelt endorsement resonated deeply with viewers, including locals and international travelers. One viewer pointed out that his host was a Meghalaya minister, adding context to the exceptional reception. The overwhelming consensus echoed Lewis’s sentiment, with many describing people from the Northeast as the 'kindest people' they've met, turning his 'scam' narrative into a heartwarming celebration of genuine human connection and exceptional travel experiences.
