Marina Beach boasts a rich past, with its origins tracing back to the 1880s when Governor Mountstuart Grant Duff established a seaside promenade, christening
it 'Madaras Marina'. This area historically served as a crucial meeting point for many prominent freedom fighters prior to India's independence. Over time, the beach's landscape has been enriched with numerous significant statues and memorials. Among these is the 'Triumph of Labour,' a powerful sculpture by Debi Prasad Roy Chowdhury, erected in 1959, which vividly portrays human exertion. In 1968, a distinct cultural addition was made with the installation of statues commemorating eminent figures from Tamil literature, including Kambar, Avvaiyar, Thiruvalluvar, Subramania Bharathiyar, Veeramamunivar, and Bharathidasan. Further expanding its historical narrative, the beach now features monuments dedicated to influential personalities such as Kannagi, and celebrated politicians like Arignar Anna, M.G. Ramachandran, J. Jayalalithaa, and M. Karunanidhi, cementing its status as a place where history is etched in stone.
