Unjha Factory Uncovered
In a significant move to safeguard public health, Gujarat's Food Safety Department conducted a targeted raid on the Ganapati Cleaning Factory located in Unjha.
This operation brought to light severe breaches of food safety regulations. It was discovered that the facility was operating without the mandatory FSSAI license, a crucial permit required for any business involved in food production or distribution in India. The enforcement team found evidence that the operator was not only non-compliant with licensing requirements but was also engaging in deceptive practices to enhance the marketability of their products.
Deceptive Dyeing Practices
The primary focus of the raid was the discovery of an illegal process designed to make fennel seeds appear more appealing to unsuspecting consumers. Officials found that a non-edible green colour was being mixed directly with batches of fennel seeds. This chemical dye was used to impart a vibrant green hue, a stark contrast to the natural colour of saunf, likely to create an impression of freshness or quality. This deliberate adulteration poses a serious risk to public health, as these dyes are not approved for consumption and can contain harmful substances, leading to potential health complications for those who ingest them.
Massive Seizure, Stern Warning
The enforcement action resulted in the seizure of an astounding quantity of adulterated fennel seeds, amounting to over 3,500 kilograms. In addition to the tainted produce, approximately 140 kilograms of the unsafe green colouring agent used in the adulteration process were also confiscated. Samples of the seized fennel seeds and the dye have been promptly dispatched for laboratory analysis to confirm the exact nature of the contaminants and their potential health impact. The FSSAI has issued a strong warning, vowing to continue implementing stringent measures and legal actions against any food business operators found to be compromising consumer safety and violating the Food Safety and Standards Act.
