The DIY Facelift Technique
Actress Shenaz Treasury, at 44, has revealed a personal 5-minute facelift massage routine she acquired from a professional during a trip to the Maldives.
She shared this routine on Instagram, suggesting it can make one look significantly younger. Treasury describes it as a cost-free, face yoga-inspired practice involving subtle movements that revitalize the skin, making it appear more 'alive.' The core of the technique involves several distinct steps. Initially, one should apply pressure to the jawline with the fingers, repeating this action three times. Following this, the hands are placed beside the nose and swept outwards towards the ears; this motion is specifically for lymphatic drainage and should also be done three times. Next, starting from the corners of the eyes, gentle pressure is applied, moving upwards towards the temples, a lifting motion to be repeated thrice. Treasury then advises holding the 'third eye' area for about 30 seconds, followed by pressing outwards towards the sides, again repeating this thrice. The process continues with pinching the eyebrows, a gentle pinch-and-release action. Subsequently, fingers are placed in the middle of the temple and swept outwards, a movement Treasury associates with saying 'bye-bye wrinkles.' A neck lift is incorporated using upward strokes along the neck, and similar upward strokes are applied to the cheeks, which she humorously notes as a 'hello collagen' step. The routine concludes with forehead smoothing to combat wrinkles and a tapping motion across the head and face, including 'butterfly taps' on the face and neck, all contributing to this 'DIY 5-minute facelift' and natural collagen enhancement.
Expert Opinion on Face Yoga
While Shenaz Treasury's DIY facelift massage focuses on facial movements, experts offer a balanced perspective on the efficacy of face yoga. Dr. Ajay Dodeja, a junior consultant in dermatology at KIMS Hospitals, Thane, explains that face yoga involves targeted exercises for facial muscles. Theoretically, these movements could stimulate muscles and improve blood circulation, leading to a more refreshed look. However, he cautions that the impact is generally limited. Face yoga is unlikely to significantly alter skin elasticity or boost collagen production in a way that rivals professional cosmetic or medical treatments. With consistent practice, some individuals might notice minor improvements, such as reduced puffiness, a temporary glow due to enhanced blood flow, and increased awareness of facial muscle relaxation, particularly around the jaw and forehead. Crucially, Dr. Dodeja states that it does not effectively address loose skin or reverse deep-seated signs of aging. Therefore, while the practice can be a pleasant addition to a wellness routine, its ability to deliver dramatic, long-term anti-aging results is debatable.
Safety and Skincare Comparison
Regarding the safety of face yoga, Dr. Dodeja emphasizes that when performed with correct techniques and moderation, it is generally safe. However, he warns against excessive stretching, pulling, or improper execution, as these actions could inadvertently stress the skin and potentially contribute to fine lines rather than reduce them. Therefore, mindful and gentle practice is essential. When comparing face yoga to established skincare and dermatological treatments, Dr. Dodeja clarifies that face yoga should be viewed as a complementary practice, not a replacement. Proven methods like diligent skincare, daily sun protection, and professional dermatological procedures—such as chemical peels, laser treatments, and injectables—operate on a deeper cellular level within the skin. In contrast, face yoga primarily influences surface muscle activity, limiting its overall impact. The perceived benefits from face yoga often stem from temporary improvements like enhanced blood flow, muscle engagement that makes skin appear plumper, and the psychological effects of mindfulness and relaxation. Reduced stress levels, often associated with such practices, can indeed contribute positively to overall skin health and alleviate facial tension.
