Siliguri's Strategic Importance
Prime Minister Narendra Modi recently emphasized the critical role of the Siliguri region in West Bengal from a national security perspective. He highlighted
that the Siliguri corridor, often called the 'Chicken's Neck,' is not merely a geographical feature but vital for India's integrity, connecting the mainland to the Northeast. This narrow strip of land, approximately 20–22 km wide at its thinnest point, shares proximity with international borders including Bangladesh, Nepal, Bhutan, and China, making its security a paramount concern for the nation's defense infrastructure and strategic positioning.
Allegations Against TMC
During a rally in Siliguri, Prime Minister Modi leveled serious accusations against the Trinamool Congress (TMC), claiming they have consistently appeased a group he labeled the 'Tukde-tukde gang.' He asserted that this group has posed threats to India's unity, specifically by aiming to sever the Northeast from the rest of the country. According to Modi, the TMC has not only supported such elements but has, in his words, 'rewarded' them, indicating a policy of appeasement designed to secure their vote bank, even at the expense of national security. This alleged leniency, he stated, extends from street-level activism to parliamentary support.
Hindrances to Development
Beyond security concerns, Prime Minister Modi also accused the Trinamool Congress government in West Bengal of actively obstructing the implementation of various welfare initiatives launched by the Union government. He pointed to the issue of illegal infiltration, stating that these individuals, allegedly favored by the ruling state party, are creating significant barriers to West Bengal's overall development. Furthermore, Modi contended that the presence of these infiltrators is directly impacting local employment opportunities, leading to job losses for residents. He urged the populace to support the BJP, symbolized by the 'lotus,' to remove these infiltrators and usher in positive change.
A Call for Change
PM Modi addressed the political history of West Bengal, noting the long tenures of the Left Front (34 years) and the subsequent three consecutive terms of the Trinamool Congress. He implored the citizens to give his party, the BJP, a chance to govern. He pledged that his government would focus on protecting women, generating employment opportunities, establishing the rule of law, ensuring free medical treatment for the impoverished, and safeguarding Bengali culture from what he described as appeasement politics. This appeal framed the upcoming elections as a crucial juncture for the state's future direction.
