Data Consumption Soars
In 2025, the average Indian mobile user consumed an impressive 31 GB of data each month, marking a substantial increase from the 27.5 GB recorded in 2024.
This upward trend, representing an 18 percent compound annual growth rate over the last five years, is largely attributed to the widespread availability of enhanced Mobile Broadband services and a growing appetite for data-hungry activities. These include sophisticated AI applications, high-definition 4K video streaming, and immersive cloud gaming experiences. The overall data traffic across the nation surged past 27 exabytes monthly, showcasing a remarkable 21.7 percent CAGR over the same five-year period. This dramatic expansion underscores the nation's transition towards a more data-centric digital ecosystem, with users increasingly relying on their mobile devices for a wide array of online activities.
5G's Dominant Role
The 5G network has emerged as the primary engine driving India's mobile data revolution, accounting for a significant 47 percent of the country's total mobile broadband traffic in 2025. Monthly 5G data traffic experienced an extraordinary 70 percent year-on-year surge, reaching an astonishing 12.9 exabytes. This rapid adoption positions India as a global leader, boasting the world's second-largest 5G subscriber base, the second-highest level of 5G data consumption, and the second-largest 5G Fixed Wireless Access (FWA) user base. FWA, in particular, has been a pivotal factor in this data surge, contributing over 25 percent of all 5G data usage and showing a two-fold increase in subscribers year-on-year. This indicates a strong consumer preference for high-speed, reliable wireless connectivity solutions for their homes and businesses.
Device Ecosystem Shifts
The transformation in India's mobile data consumption is closely mirrored by significant shifts within the device ecosystem. By 2025, the number of active 4G devices had reached 892 million, with a substantial portion, over 383 million, now equipped with 5G capabilities. This transition is being powerfully accelerated by a massive tenfold year-on-year increase in shipments of budget-friendly 5G phones, priced under USD 100. In fact, more than 90 percent of all smartphones shipped during the year were 5G-ready, signaling a clear industry-wide pivot towards the latest generation of mobile technology. This widespread availability of affordable 5G-capable devices ensures that a larger segment of the population can access and benefit from the enhanced speeds and capabilities of the 5G network.
Future Outlook Promising
Looking ahead, the trajectory of India's mobile broadband landscape points towards continued rapid growth and innovation. Projections indicate that the nation's 5G subscriber base is poised to surpass the one billion mark by the year 2031. This optimistic outlook is supported by the ongoing expansion of network infrastructure, the development of new data-intensive applications, and the increasing affordability of 5G-enabled devices. As networks evolve to support emerging usage patterns and intelligent services, the focus will remain on building robust, scalable, and future-ready connectivity solutions. This sustained growth is expected to further solidify India's position as a global leader in mobile data consumption and digital connectivity.
