A Monumental Confection
A colossal chocolate train, stretching an astonishing 55.27 meters (181 feet 3 inches), has officially clinched the title for the longest in the world
according to Guinness World Records. This extraordinary creation, unveiled in Milan's Piazza Città di Lombardia on January 26, 2026, is a testament to dedicated artistry. It features a meticulously crafted engine and 22 individual carriages, each weighing a substantial 160 kilograms, all composed entirely of chocolate. The entire sculpture, a true feat of confectionery engineering, weighed in at approximately 2,300 kilograms, bringing a whimsical vision of a vintage rail icon to life with edible precision.
Mastermind and Master Builders
The visionary behind this colossal chocolate train is Maltese pastry chef Andrew Farrugia, associated with Malta's Institute of Tourism Studies. This ambitious project was a significant collaboration, bringing together Italy's Consorzi di Pasticcerie Bergamo-Brescia. The creation process spanned several months, involving skilled Italian and Maltese chocolatiers, alongside enthusiastic students from various schools and training centers. Working diligently in the Minetti 1980 labs, these artisans meticulously sculpted each carriage using premium Belcolade Italia chocolate sourced from Puratos Italia. The complex logistics of transporting and assembling the massive sections were expertly handled by logistics professionals from Brivio & Viganò, ensuring the final assembly was a smooth success.
Sculpting Sweet Details
The construction of this remarkable chocolate train commenced in October 2025, with an unwavering commitment to authenticity and detail. Every element, from the intricate designs on the locomotive roofs to the decorative embellishments on the carriage exteriors, was painstakingly hand-sculpted. No molds or shortcuts were employed; instead, artisans dedicated themselves to shaping the chocolate to perfectly emulate the appearance of a vintage rail icon. This commitment to pure, unadulterated hand-sculpting ensured a level of detail that captivated onlookers until the display concluded on February 2. This approach highlights the profound artistic skill involved, transforming a simple treat into an elaborate, recognizable sculpture.
A Record-Breaking Legacy
This isn't the first time Andrew Farrugia has made headlines with his chocolate train creations. He previously held records for his earlier projects, including a 34.05-meter train in 2012 and another significant build in Brescia in December 2025. The current 55.27-meter train builds upon this legacy, showcasing a continuous dedication to pushing the boundaries of edible art. The sheer scale of the project, combined with its historical nods to old-school steam trains, demonstrates a unique blend of culinary expertise and artistic vision. The creation resonated widely, sparking enthusiastic reactions online, with many expressing awe at its size and ingenuity.
