New Account Tiers
Roblox is rolling out distinct account types designed to better safeguard its younger demographic, specifically for users aged under 9 and those between
9 and 15. These new designations, 'Roblox Kids' and 'Roblox Select,' will automatically apply varied levels of protective measures. The platform leverages sophisticated age-checking technology, drawing from its existing chat system that utilizes facial age estimation or ID verification to match users with age-appropriate peers. This ensures that content and interactions are suitable for the designated age groups. The rollout of these new account structures is slated to commence globally from June 2026, marking a significant step in the platform's ongoing commitment to user safety and adherence to evolving digital protection standards across the internet.
Content and Interaction Controls
The 'Roblox Kids' account is engineered for users aged 5 to 8, granting them access exclusively to games rated for audiences under 9 years old that have successfully passed Roblox's rigorous multi-step screening. A distinct background color will be applied to these accounts, offering parents an immediate visual cue confirming their child is using an age-appropriate profile. Communication features for 'Roblox Kids' are disabled by default. For users aged 9 to 15, the 'Roblox Select' account provides access to games rated up to 'Moderate.' Similar to the Kids accounts, these games must also undergo the comprehensive screening process. Chat is enabled by default for 'Roblox Select' users, but communication is restricted to a predefined list of 'Trusted Friends' and other users within a similar age bracket, further enhancing safety and controlled social interaction on the platform.
Age Verification Accuracy
Beginning January 2026, Roblox mandated age-checks for all users aiming to access communication functionalities, a requirement that has seen over 50 percent of its daily active users globally complete either facial age estimation or ID verification. While parents retain the ability to correct a child's registered age, Roblox has not disclosed specific data regarding the precision of its age-checking technologies. Concerns have been voiced by digital rights advocates, such as the Electronic Frontier Foundation, highlighting that age estimation tools, often a primary layer of age assurance, can be unreliable, particularly for marginalized user groups. The accuracy of these systems remains a critical point of discussion as platforms increasingly rely on them for age verification, with potential implications for user privacy and security.
Game Screening Process
Every game introduced to or currently existing on Roblox will undergo a meticulous three-phase review before being made accessible to younger users. This process begins with 'Developer Verification,' requiring game creators under 16 to complete identity verification, possess an active Roblox Plus subscription, and enable two-step account verification. The second stage, 'Real-Time Evaluation,' employs Roblox's advanced multimodal moderation system to analyze entire game scenes for rule violations using automated signals. The final step, 'Games Eligibility Check,' ensures games meet specific gameplay criteria and possess the correct content maturity label pertinent to the account holder's age. Certain experiences, including those dealing with sensitive subjects, casual social gatherings, or free-form drawing, are automatically excluded from 'Roblox Kids' and 'Roblox Select' accounts by default.
