Dual Foundry Strategy
Tesla is embracing a multi-foundry approach for its advanced chip production, enlisting both Samsung and TSMC as manufacturing partners. This strategic decision is designed to ensure robust production capacity and mitigate potential supply chain vulnerabilities, especially given the escalating global demand for sophisticated semiconductor technology. This dual-vendor strategy provides flexibility and resilience, allowing Tesla to scale its operations effectively and respond to market dynamics. Samsung's Crucial Role
Samsung is set to play an even more significant part in Tesla's AI chip ecosystem, having secured a substantial contract valued at approximately 23 trillion Korean won (USD 15.6 billion) through 2033 for the production of Tesla's AI6 processors. These AI6 chips are destined for manufacture using Samsung's state-of-the-art 2nm process at its facility in Texas. This partnership is particularly vital for Samsung, whose foundry division has been navigating a challenging period marked by substantial quarterly losses, largely attributed to subdued order volumes and intense competition. Success in securing high-profile clients like Tesla is considered paramount for reinforcing Samsung's standing in the competitive landscape of advanced chip manufacturing.
Next-Gen Performance Gains
The AI6 processor, manufactured by Samsung on its 2nm node, promises a performance leap, delivering approximately double the computational power of its predecessor, the AI5, while maintaining the same physical chip area. Further enhancing this capability, an advanced variant, the AI6.5, will be produced by TSMC utilizing a 2nm process in Arizona, offering even greater performance improvements. Production for these cutting-edge chips is anticipated to be distributed across fabrication plants equipped to handle 2- to 3-nanometer nodes, including Samsung's forthcoming Taylor facility in Texas and its established Pyeongtaek site. Earlier AI4 chips were manufactured in South Korea, indicating a shift in production strategy for newer generations.
