A Shocking Cabin
A recent flight from Bangkok to India became the subject of an online firestorm thanks to travel vlogger Sandhya Majji. Majji shared a video on Instagram
that vividly depicted rows of seats strewn with garbage, prompting her to label the scene as 'shameful.' Her frustration was palpable as she questioned the absence of passenger responsibility, particularly when it comes to maintaining cleanliness. She noted that this wasn't an isolated occurrence, having frequently observed similar untidiness on flights, especially those carrying a significant number of Indian passengers. Majji further commented that the state of the cabin reminded her of the disarray sometimes found in public government buses within rural Indian villages, emphasizing that such littering is unacceptable irrespective of the location.
Beyond the Mess
The issue of passenger mess extends beyond mere aesthetics and inconvenience, significantly impacting airline operations. Majji pointed out that the need to thoroughly clean the aircraft before its next departure can contribute to flight delays. She also recounted a particularly disturbing experience with an airplane restroom, which she described as being in an appalling state. In this instance, the toilet area was flooded with urine, surrounded by scattered tissues, and generally wet and filthy. Majji expressed her sympathy for the flight attendant who had to clean the lavatory with her bare hands, deeming such behavior as profoundly disrespectful and indicative of a broader disregard for shared spaces and the people who maintain them.
Online Reactions
Majji's video and subsequent comments resonated widely across social media platforms, sparking a robust debate on passenger etiquette and the general standard of cleanliness in public transportation. Many users echoed her sentiments, criticizing the habits displayed and reflecting on how such behavior abroad can inadvertently shape international perceptions of India. Comments ranged from observations about Indians exhibiting similar behaviors globally to more pointed remarks about these actions posing a challenge to the country's progress. One particularly stark anecdote shared by a user described finding a baby's changed diaper discarded under a seat on a Delhi to London flight, with the rest of the plane in an even worse condition than depicted in Majji's video, underscoring the widespread nature of the problem.
