A New River Adventure
The picturesque Panamkuzhy Eco Tourism Centre, nestled along the banks of the Periyar River in Perumbavoor, has unveiled an enchanting new way for visitors
to experience the region's natural splendor. Traditional coracle boat rides have officially commenced, offering a novel and intimate encounter with Kerala's captivating riverine landscapes. This initiative is poised to significantly bolster eco-tourism in the state, inviting travelers to immerse themselves in the tranquil beauty of the river and its surrounding natural trails. The inauguration of this unique boating activity took place with a formal ceremony, marking a significant step in enhancing the tourist appeal of the area and providing a fresh perspective on the natural wonders of Kerala.
The Coracle Experience
To facilitate this novel experience, the eco-tourism center has thoughtfully equipped itself with a fleet of 10 licensed coracle boats. These traditional vessels are not only a nod to local heritage but are also operated by highly skilled individuals. The operators have undergone rigorous training and possess certifications from the esteemed National Institute of Water Sports, ensuring that every passenger's journey is both safe and thoroughly enjoyable. Each coracle ride is designed to last approximately 30 minutes, offering a perfect duration for soaking in the scenery without feeling rushed. These charming boats are designed to comfortably accommodate up to four passengers per trip, making it an ideal activity for small groups or families. The cost for this delightful 30-minute excursion is set at ₹600 per ride. As an added incentive, visitors who opt for the coracle ride will find that the standard ₹50 entry fee to the eco-tourism centre is waived, providing a comprehensive and value-added experience.
Scenic Vistas Await
The meticulously planned coracle route offers unparalleled, breathtaking vistas of Vempuram Island. This picturesque island lies in close proximity to the eco-tourism zone, presenting a serene and captivating sight for all who embark on the journey. Situated roughly four kilometers away from the main wildlife sanctuary, Vempuram Island provides a tranquil escape and a unique perspective on the region's biodiversity. Before the introduction of these coracle rides, the primary draws at Panamkuzhy Eco Tourism Centre included leisurely strolls through groves of ancient mahogany trees and safe, designated areas for river bathing. With the addition of boat rides, authorities are optimistic about a substantial increase in visitor numbers. The strategic location of the eco-tourism centre, situated along the route connecting the Kodanad-Kaprikkad (Abhayaranyam) Wildlife Sanctuary and the popular Paniyeli Poru, positions it as an easily accessible and convenient stopover for travelers exploring the broader tourist circuit of the region.
