New Bundles Explained
SpaceX has introduced two new package configurations for its satellite internet service, labeled 'Standard 4' and 'Standard 4 X.' These aren't indicative
of an entirely new dish model but rather a simplification of existing product names, with '4' likely referencing the current standard dish's internal model designation. Previously, new customers received a single bundle with a Gen 3 router. Now, two distinct options are presented to cater to different user needs and subscription tiers. This change aims to provide greater clarity on the hardware provided with each service level. The company has updated its website and retail partners with these updated monikers, signaling a shift in how customers will identify their Starlink hardware packages.
Standard 4 vs. Standard 4 X
The 'Standard 4' bundle is specifically designed for users subscribing to the entry-level Residential 100Mbps plan. This package includes the standard Starlink dish paired with the smaller 'Router Mini,' which supports dual-band Wi-Fi 6. In contrast, the 'Standard 4 X' bundle is offered to those who opt for the faster Residential 200Mbps plan. This configuration features the standard Starlink dish along with the Gen 3 router, known for its tri-band Wi-Fi 6 capabilities. The Gen 3 router seems to have been internally renamed as well. Customers on the top-tier Residential Max plan also receive the Standard 4 X package, with an added benefit: they have the option to obtain a Router Mini for free, granting them access to both router types.
Hardware and Power Supplies
A notable distinction between the two bundles lies in their power supply units and the routers they are intended to power. The Standard 4 configuration is equipped with a power supply featuring two PoE (Power over Ethernet) ports, designed to accommodate both the Router Mini and the Starlink dish. Conversely, the Standard 4 X comes with a power supply specifically engineered to connect to the Gen 3 Router via a barrel jack connector. This Gen 3 router then connects to the Starlink dish and offers two additional Ethernet LAN ports. Industry professionals have expressed mixed reactions to the new power supply for the Standard 4, with some suspecting it only supports SpaceX's proprietary PoE standard, as testing indicated the Router Mini may not be compatible with third-party PoE adapters.
Rental Options and Availability
Currently, SpaceX is not selling the Standard 4 combo outright; it is exclusively available as a rental option for subscribers of the Residential 100Mbps plan. Similarly, the Standard 4 X plan is offered as a complimentary rental for the higher Residential service tiers. However, in areas experiencing network congestion, new sign-ups for the Standard 4 X may incur a one-time charge of $349. The introduction of the Router Mini into the most affordable plan is a strategic move, likely aimed at cost savings and optimizing performance for lower bandwidth needs. The portability, smaller footprint, and lower power consumption of the Router Mini make it a practical choice for the 1-3 person households targeted by the 100Mbps plan.
