West Bengal's Feast
As election trends in West Bengal indicated a strong showing for the BJP, supporters erupted in jubilant celebrations. At party offices in Kolkata and
Salt Lake, traditional Bengali fare was at the heart of the festivities. Cadres and well-wishers shared meals featuring dishes like fish curry, rice, dal, and distinct preparations such as fish head curry and katla fish curry. The celebratory atmosphere was further amplified by the distribution of popular street snacks like jhalmuri, which had gained significant traction during the election campaign after Prime Minister Narendra Modi's public enjoyment of it. Beyond these savory delights, a variety of sweets including rosogolla, laddoos, sandesh, and mishti doi were shared, adding a sweet note to the unfolding political victory. These culinary expressions also served as a subtle counterpoint to campaign narratives that had raised concerns about potential dietary restrictions under a BJP government, with the celebratory meals underscoring the party's commitment to preserving regional food traditions.
Delhi's Shared Delights
The BJP's electoral performance resonated beyond West Bengal, sparking celebrations in the nation's capital, Delhi. Chief Minister Rekha Gupta and her cabinet ministers participated in marking the party's success with readily available street food favorites like jhalmuri and the ubiquitous rosogolla. Adding a personal touch, BJP MP Manoj Tiwari celebrated at his residence by symbolically cutting a rosogolla cake with his family as the election trends solidified a strong lead for the party. BJP leader Virendra Sachdeva also acknowledged the party's achievements in both West Bengal and Assam by sharing mishti doi. The central BJP headquarters in New Delhi buzzed with activity throughout the day, hosting a continuous stream of party workers and visitors. The extensive food arrangements catered to hundreds of people, featuring a diverse menu prepared in batches. This included staples like aloo poori, poha, sandwiches, kadhi pakoda, parwal aloo, rice, and papad. To satisfy sweet cravings, an array of desserts such as rasgulla and mishti doi were offered, complemented by refreshing beverages like lassi and fresh fruits.
Bihar's Litti & Jalebi
Food has consistently played a role in political celebrations for the BJP, as seen during the NDA's success in the Bihar assembly polls. When the alliance surpassed the 200-seat mark, jubilant scenes unfolded at BJP and Janata Dal (United) offices. Patna witnessed the distribution of jalebi and litti chokha among supporters, a staple that resonated with the regional palate. Outside JD(U) offices, the air was filled with the sound of drums accompanying displays of large posters of Nitish Kumar, while supporters marched, chanting slogans. The BJP headquarters in Delhi also embraced a Bihar-style celebration menu for its workers, featuring sattu paratha, baingan chokha, jalebi, and litti chokha, reflecting the spirit of the alliance's victory. In Mokama, similar culinary tributes, including rasgulla and litti chokha, were reported at the residence of RJD leader Veena Devi during the counting process in her constituency, illustrating the widespread celebratory spirit tied to these regional delicacies.
Sweet Gestures & Jabs
The BJP's electoral milestones have also been marked by symbolic culinary gestures and witty remarks. Following the BJP's strong performance in the Haryana Assembly elections in 2024, party workers sent jalebis to Congress leader Rahul Gandhi's office in Delhi, a sweet yet pointed gesture signifying electoral defeat for the opposition and success for the BJP. This act was part of broader post-result celebrations where sweets were widely used to acknowledge the party's triumphs. Earlier, during the Maharashtra civic elections, BJP MPs PC Mohan and Tejasvi Surya alluded to rasmalai on social media, leveraging a term that had previously been used in a political jibe. Maharashtra Navnirman Sena chief Raj Thackeray had employed the term "rasmalai" to target BJP leader K. Annamalai during campaign interactions in Mumbai. In response, PC Mohan shared an image of rasmalai on X, while Tejasvi Surya described the outcome as a "sweet rasmalai victory." K. Annamalai later defended his earlier remarks and congratulated the alliance, while also critiquing identity-based political discourse.
