The Unexpected Blizzard
Four friends, hailing from Kerala and passionate about photography, embarked on a journey to the picturesque landscapes of Manali on March 13th. Their
itinerary included a visit to Gulaba on the 14th. The trouble began on March 15th, as they were returning from Sissu after traversing the impressive Atal Tunnel. What started as a scenic drive quickly turned into a dire situation when a severe snowfall intensified drastically. By approximately 4:30 pm, their vehicle, along with numerous others, came to a standstill, finding themselves completely ensnared within the confines of the tunnel. This unexpected blizzard transformed their photography expedition into a prolonged and anxious wait for rescue, stripping away any plans to capture the dramatic weather conditions due to fears of equipment damage.
A Night of Distress
The hours that followed were filled with growing anxiety for all passengers stranded in the tunnel. For the four friends, the experience was particularly harrowing, lasting an entire night. Access to basic amenities like drinking water was severely limited, adding to the physical discomfort. The lack of sanitation facilities became a significant source of distress, especially for the women in the group. Initially, they had considered documenting the heavy snowfall, but the intensity of the downpour, likened to rain, made them hesitant to risk their valuable camera equipment. They resorted to using their mobile phones for a few captures, but even that activity was eventually abandoned as the situation grew more critical. The sheer helplessness and the freezing temperatures made it a night they would not soon forget, even long after returning to the warmth of home.
Escape and Aftermath
It wasn't until around 5:00 am on March 16th that the ordeal finally concluded, and the group was able to exit the tunnel. The sight that greeted them upon their emergence was one of considerable disruption. They observed numerous vehicles that had lost control on the treacherous, snow-covered roads and were left abandoned along the roadside. Reports from the area indicated that the heavy snowfall had led to a massive traffic standstill, with over 1,000 vehicles becoming trapped in the vicinity of the Atal Tunnel. This immense scale of the incident underscored the severity of the weather event and the challenges faced by authorities in managing the situation. The Atal Highway Tunnel itself, a marvel of engineering connecting Manali and Leh, stretches an impressive 9.02 kilometers, making it the world's longest highway tunnel, a fact that added to the sense of isolation for those trapped within its lengthy passage.
