Air connectivity between India and the Gulf region is poised for a significant boost. Effective April 30, 2026, Air India Express is set to significantly
expand its network, restoring essential services to Qatar and Bahrain. This strategic move by the Tata Group-backed carrier aims to cater to the burgeoning travel demand between India and the Middle East. The airline is reinstating operations on numerous international routes, linking a wide array of major Indian cities with crucial Gulf destinations. This expansion underscores the growing importance of this bilateral travel corridor and the efforts to enhance accessibility for travelers.
Expanded Network Details
The enhanced flight network will facilitate travel from numerous Indian cities to key Gulf hubs. Major Indian urban centers such as Amritsar, Bengaluru, Delhi, Hyderabad, Jaipur, Kochi, Kozhikode, Kannur, Lucknow, Mangaluru, Mumbai, Tiruchirappalli, Thiruvananthapuram, and Varanasi will now have improved access to the Gulf. Specifically, the airline is increasing its presence in the United Arab Emirates, with flights scheduled to Dubai, Abu Dhabi, Sharjah, Ras Al Khaimah, and Al Ain. Services to Muscat in Oman and vital Saudi Arabian cities like Jeddah, Riyadh, and Dammam will continue as usual. In addition to the restored routes to Doha, Qatar, and Bahrain, Kuwait will remain a pivotal destination within the airline's extensive Gulf operations. This comprehensive approach ensures widespread connectivity across the region.
Meeting Travel Demand
The primary objective behind this substantial network expansion is to effectively address and satisfy the escalating passenger demand on the India-Middle East routes. Air India Express currently manages a robust operation, conducting over 500 flights daily. These flights connect 45 domestic locations and 17 international destinations spanning South Asia, Southeast Asia, and the Gulf region. The airline deploys a modern fleet comprising more than 100 Boeing 737 and Airbus A320 aircraft to manage this extensive network. This renewed focus on Gulf routes aligns with the broader trend of airlines gradually increasing their flight capacity on the India-Middle East corridors, which consistently ranks as one of the busiest international travel sectors for Indian carriers.
Broader Aviation Recovery
The enhancement of air travel options between India and the Gulf is part of a larger recovery and expansion trend observed across various airlines operating in this vital sector. Beyond Air India Express, other carriers are also bolstering their services. IndiGo is anticipated to resume its India-Qatar services shortly, according to indications from the Ministry of External Affairs. Furthermore, established airlines like Qatar Airways, along with other regional carriers, are already operating or have resumed limited services on select routes. This collective effort signifies a robust resurgence in air travel activity across the India-Gulf aviation landscape, promising more choices and convenience for passengers.
