Yatra Commencement Details
The spiritual atmosphere in the Himalayas resonated with the ringing bells as the Kedarnath shrine, home to the fifth Jyotirlinga, officially commenced
its 2026 pilgrimage. The auspicious opening occurred on Wednesday, April 22, at 8 am, allowing devotees to enter the sacred premises. The temple was adorned with approximately 51 quintals of fresh flowers, creating a stunning visual contrast against the ancient stone structure. Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami was among the many pilgrims present to mark the beginning of this six-month spiritual journey. Notably, the 2026 opening date was ten days earlier than the previous year, which saw the shrine open on May 2, 2025. This earlier commencement provides an extended period for millions of pilgrims, both domestic and international, to seek the blessings of Baba Kedar. In parallel, the Badrinath Dham is scheduled to open its doors tomorrow, April 23, following the openings of Gangotri and Yamunotri on April 19.
Navigating New Pilgrimage Rules
To ensure the sanctity and solemnity of the Kedarnath shrine, new regulations have been put in place for the 2026 yatra. A significant new rule mandates a strict prohibition on mobile phones within the temple complex. This ban extends to taking photographs, recording videos, or creating social media reels inside the premises. Authorities have issued stern warnings that violations of this mobile ban or attempting to carry phones into the complex will result in penalties. This decisive measure is aimed at fostering an environment of deep reverence and focused devotion for all pilgrims.
Mandatory Kedarnath Registration
For all individuals planning their pilgrimage to Kedarnath, registration is a non-negotiable requirement. The government has implemented a streamlined online process to effectively manage the anticipated high volume of pilgrims. To complete your registration, you must visit the official portal at https://registrationandtouristcare.uk.gov.in/. The process involves registering your vehicle details and undergoing verification at designated checkpoints within each shrine area. Upon successful registration, it is crucial to obtain darshan slot tokens, which are essential for a smooth and organized entry into the temple for your darshan.
Reaching the Holy Shrine
The journey to Kedarnath Temple involves several options, catering to different preferences and physical capabilities. The primary trekking route begins from Gaurikund, which serves as the base camp for the arduous 16 km trek to the shrine. This path offers breathtaking views of the mountains and rivers but is physically challenging due to steep inclines. It is advisable to commence the trek at dawn, maintain a steady pace with regular pauses, and utilize the numerous rest stops and eateries available along the trail. For those who find trekking difficult, Gaurikund provides alternative transport services. Pony rides are available, taking approximately 7–8 hours for the ascent, offering a less strenuous option. Palanquin (Palki) services are also available, completing the journey in about 5–6 hours, representing the most comfortable yet premium choice. The swiftest way to reach the temple is by helicopter, with services operating from Phata, Guptkashi, or Sirsi, and the flight duration is a mere 10–15 minutes. Due to high demand, advance booking for helicopter services is strongly recommended, particularly during the peak pilgrimage months.
