Voter Roll Revisions
The finalization of electoral rolls in Kolkata, following an intensive adjudication process, has revealed a substantial decrease in the number of registered
voters. Specifically, across the Kolkata North and Kolkata South districts, a total of 6,06,563 names have been deleted. This significant reduction is particularly noteworthy when compared to the vote differential the Trinamool Congress (TMC) held over the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in the most recent Assembly elections. Kolkata South saw a decrease of 2,47,882 voters, representing a nearly 27% drop, while Kolkata North experienced deletions of 3,58,681 names, a decline of approximately 24%. These figures suggest a potential reshaping of the electorate, prompting reassessment of electoral strategies by all major political players within the city.
Historical Electoral Trends
Examining past electoral performances provides crucial context to the current situation. In the 2021 Assembly elections, the TMC secured a clean sweep, winning all 14 Assembly seats within Kolkata. The margin of victory in Kolkata South was a substantial 3.46 lakh votes, and in Kolkata North, it stood at 2.62 lakh votes. However, recent trends in the 2024 general elections indicate a narrowing gap. While the TMC's victory margin in Kolkata South increased to 1.87 lakh votes, it saw a decrease in Kolkata North, though still a comfortable 92,560 votes. Furthermore, the 2024 Kolkata Municipal Corporation elections saw the BJP establishing leads in over 40 of the 144 wards, including a lead in more than five wards within Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee's Bhabanipur constituency, signalling a growing BJP presence at the local level.
TMC's Concerns and Strategy
The significant reduction in voter numbers has undeniably raised concerns within the Trinamool Congress camp. A senior TMC leader acknowledged the party's apprehension, especially noting that over 50,000 votes were deleted even from the Chief Minister's constituency, Bhabanipur. This is particularly concerning given that in the 2021 by-election for Bhabanipur, Mamata Banerjee's victory margin was less than 50,000. While the exact impact of these deletions on voter demographics remains unclear, the party is intensifying its ground-level efforts. TMC workers are actively engaging with households across Kolkata to mobilize support, anticipating that while victory is still expected, their winning margins might be reduced. The party remains committed to retaining all seats in the city, despite the challenging shifts.
BJP's Optimism and Allegations
Conversely, the Bharatiya Janata Party views the recent voter deletions with considerable optimism, anticipating strong performance in Kolkata. A senior BJP leader expressed confidence, attributing potential gains not only to the reduced voter count but also to the expectation that the TMC will be unable to resort to unfair electoral practices. The BJP leadership believes that the altered voter rolls, coupled with what they perceive as a more level playing field, could lead to favourable outcomes. This sentiment is bolstered by the BJP's demonstrated lead in numerous wards during the recent municipal elections, indicating a growing base of support within the city that they aim to capitalize on in upcoming electoral contests.
