A Glimpse of Her Past
Kanak Agrawal, an alumna of IIT Kanpur, once navigated the demanding corporate landscape, including a stint at McKinsey in Gurgaon. Following this, she
embarked on an entrepreneurial venture, co-founding a startup that she dedicated five years to building. Despite professional achievements, a deep sense of dissatisfaction lingered. Her upbringing near Kota, a hub for IIT coaching, heavily influenced her educational trajectory, as she pursued engineering following her brother's footsteps into an IIT. This path, she reflects, felt less like a personal choice and more like a predetermined outcome. Even the startup opportunity, which arose from a friend's idea, didn't fully resonate with her aspirations, leaving her with an unfulfilled feeling even as things progressed positively.
The Great Transition
At the age of 31, Kanak Agrawal made the significant decision to leave both her established corporate role and her five-year-old startup. This was not a reaction to failure, but rather a profound realization that neither path authentically represented her true self. She recognized the societal emphasis on relentless hustle and climbing the corporate ladder, a narrative she chose to deviate from. Instead, she sought a life characterized by peace and personal autonomy. Her current residence in the picturesque hills of Himachal Pradesh marks a stark contrast to her former life. The rushed, anxiety-ridden mornings and constant pressures of startup operations have been replaced by a deliberate and unhurried rhythm. She now prioritizes waking gently, incorporating practices like journaling, preparing wholesome meals, and making space for hobbies and personal well-being, embracing a freedom where she doesn't need external validation to live.
Redefining Success
While Kanak Agrawal's current earnings are less substantial than those from her corporate career, her contentment has soared. She now channels her energy into creating travel content and ghostwriting, alongside hosting intimate retreats focused on slow living. This lifestyle is punctuated by extended periods of backpacking, both within India and internationally, spanning four years. The core of her satisfaction stems from the authenticity of her chosen path; she shared with Moneycontrol that this life 'feels like mine.' Her parents initially expressed shock at her decisions, first regarding McKinsey and then the startup, and found her subsequent choices even harder to comprehend. Despite their lingering desire for her to prioritize stability and settle down, they have ultimately respected her autonomy, allowing her the space to pursue her unconventional vision of happiness and fulfillment.
Embracing Uncertainty
The shift to independent work, while liberating, presents its own set of challenges, notably the absence of the structured support and safety nets typically found in corporate environments. Kanak acknowledges that this path demands considerable mental fortitude. However, she also highlights the profound personal growth that arises from such circumstances. She finds that being solely responsible for every facet of her life fosters a unique kind of development, pushing her to confront and manage aspects she might otherwise have avoided. Every decision, from her living location to the projects she undertakes, is now a conscious and deliberate choice. Having spent a significant period adhering to external expectations, she now finds empowerment even in the uncertainty, recognizing that this freedom of choice is what truly distinguishes her current life.
