Resilience Amidst Challenges
The tourism sector in Kashmir has demonstrated exceptional strength and recovery, especially following a difficult period in 2025. Despite a significant
terror attack in April 2025 that claimed 25 lives, an incident orchestrated to sow discord between tourists and locals, the region's appeal remained undiminished. Official government reports indicate that an impressive 1.62 crore (16.2 million) tourists visited Jammu and Kashmir in 2025. This number underscores the deep-rooted connection between tourists and the valley, proving that such acts of terror failed to break this bond. The preceding year, 2024, had already been a landmark season, setting a historical high with approximately 98.1 lakh (9.81 million) visitors, a substantial increase from prior years. Although the Pahalgam attack caused a dip in footfall for the Kashmir division in 2025, the overall trend points towards a robust resurgence, showcasing the inherent charm and allure of Kashmir that continues to draw travelers from far and wide.
Enhanced Safety Measures
Ensuring the safety and comfort of every visitor is paramount, and Kashmir has implemented a comprehensive, multi-tier security network across all its major tourist destinations. This enhanced security presence is designed to foster a sense of complete safety, allowing travelers to immerse themselves in the beauty of the region without concern. Patrols have been increased, surveillance systems bolstered, and Union Ministers have publicly framed the return of tourists as a triumphant moment, signifying a victory over malicious attempts to disrupt growth and incite separatism. The reopening of 14 key tourist spots that were temporarily closed for security evaluations as of February 2026 further signals a commitment to normalcy and accessibility. These robust safety protocols are instrumental in rebuilding and sustaining traveler confidence, making Kashmir a secure and welcoming destination for all.
Record-Breaking Projections
The outlook for Kashmir's tourism in 2026 is exceptionally bright, with projections indicating that visitor numbers are set to surpass all previous records. This optimistic forecast is supported by tangible evidence on the ground. For instance, popular destinations like Gulmarg and Pahalgam are experiencing near-full hotel occupancy, a testament to the surge in domestic tourism. Director Tourism, Syed Qamar Sajad, noted a dramatic increase in activity, contrasting the current surge in visitors for the Gandola ride with numbers from the previous May. He expressed confidence that daily data points towards exceeding last year's figures. The success of winter festivals, driven by heavy snowfall, has also been a significant draw, attracting global tourists. This renewed enthusiasm, coupled with the improved security landscape, paints a picture of a thriving tourism industry poised for unprecedented success.
Contributing Factors to Growth
Several key factors are contributing to the significant revival and anticipated record-breaking visitor numbers in Kashmir. The recent launch of the train link connecting Srinagar to the rest of India via the Katra-Srinagar route has proven to be a major catalyst, significantly improving accessibility and ease of travel for tourists. This infrastructural development plays a crucial role in boosting the influx of visitors. Furthermore, the tourism industry is a vital economic contributor, accounting for nearly 7 percent of Jammu and Kashmir's Gross State Domestic Product (GSDP) and providing livelihoods for thousands through sectors such as hospitality, transportation, and handicrafts. Local initiatives and collaborative efforts between authorities and the community have also been pivotal in restoring confidence and encouraging more people to visit. The positive feedback from tourists, who often express awe at the region's beauty and safety, further bolsters the industry's growth prospects.
