Tuscan Wedding Bliss
The journey began with a pre-wedding escape to Umbria, staying at a charming boutique hotel where the hosts’ hospitality led to an unexpected room upgrade.
This tranquil start set the stage for the main event: a destination wedding in Tuscany. The chosen venue, a renovated farmhouse brimming with olive trees, two pools, and tennis courts, offered an authentic Italian ambiance. It felt like an adult summer camp, with all 60 guests staying on-site for three nights, fostering a sense of shared experience. The property's commitment to farm-to-table dining, with guests encouraged to pick fresh produce, added a unique flavor. Days were filled with activities like soaking in thermal baths, exploring a nearby sculpture garden, wine tasting, visiting the local village of Capalbio, and enjoying seaside lunches and drinks at favored spots. The venue's colorful, welcoming atmosphere, blended with modern touches, provided a perfect backdrop for a memorable celebration. The wedding itself was deeply personal, inspired by the couple's shared love for travel and a desire for a less traditional affair.
Sardinian Seaside Adventures
Following the Tuscan festivities, the honeymoon continued with a shift to Sardinia, a destination shared with cherished friends and family. The initial leg involved a flight from Rome to Corsica, spending a night in Bonifacio before crossing over to Sardinia. A fortunate last-minute invitation led to an extraordinary experience on a yacht, which became the primary setting for many days. Exploring the pristine waters and enjoying the coastal scenery from the sea was a highlight. When not on the water, the group explored charming coastal towns like Poltu Quatu and Porto Cervo. While the maritime focus was dominant, the experience ignited a desire for more in-depth land-based exploration of Sardinia in the future. This part of the trip offered a fantastic blend of relaxation and adventure, shared with loved ones against the stunning backdrop of the Sardinian coastline.
Sicilian Cultural Immersion
The grand finale of the honeymoon unfolded in Sicily, beginning with a flight from Sardinia to Palermo. The accommodation was an extraordinary Airbnb, a unique library loft offering a truly distinctive stay. The hosts provided invaluable local insights, including arranging an exceptional food tour led by a knowledgeable local guide. Palermo itself proved to be a city best discovered by wandering, with days spent exploring its vibrant piazzas, art galleries, museums, and delightful pastry shops. Culinary discoveries included delectable almond cookies, refreshing Sicilian watermelon jelly, memorable dinners at specific establishments, and delicious gelato. A chance encounter at a wine bar led to a friendship with the owner, who even secured a table at a Michelin-starred restaurant. A delightful day trip to the coastal town of Cefalù offered a change of pace with its lovely beach and charming Old Town. This immersion into Sicilian life provided a rich tapestry of cultural and gastronomic experiences.
Mount Etna and Taormina
The Sicilian exploration continued with a scenic drive towards Mount Etna, punctuated by a stop for a delightful pasta lunch featuring the regional specialty, Maccheroni alla Norma. The journey then led to a remarkable stay at an 18th-century villa, a former monastery transformed into private cottages set amidst vineyards. The expansive property, featuring an infinity pool with ocean views, required golf carts for navigation, highlighting its sheer size. Guests were treated to daily deliveries of fresh, hand-picked fruit, including tart oranges influenced by the volcanic soil. The final part of the trip was spent in Taormina, residing at a beautiful waterfront hotel reminiscent of luxury properties featured in popular culture. The hotel's rooftop pool offered breathtaking views, perfect for enjoying the scenery observed during a memorable boat day. Exploring the town via cable car was a highlight, though the prevalence of American tourists prompted a reflection on achieving deeper immersion in local culture. This segment offered a blend of natural wonders and refined relaxation, capped by breathtaking vistas.
