Launched by JR East in 2012, the POKÉMON with YOU Train emerged as a beacon of joy following the devastating 2011 Tohoku earthquake and tsunami. Its primary
mission was to rekindle happiness among children and families impacted by the disaster and to reignite tourism in the affected areas. This cheerful yellow train, adorned with beloved Pikachu imagery both inside and out, quickly became a cherished symbol of the region's resilience and a testament to the power of bringing smiles to people's faces through beloved characters. Pikachu's Wonderland
The exterior of the POKÉMON with YOU Train is a vibrant spectacle, painted in a brilliant sunny yellow and adorned with numerous cheerful illustrations of Pikachu. Stepping inside, the enchantment intensifies, transforming the carriages into a veritable Pokémon paradise. Passengers are greeted by seats featuring playful Pikachu designs, subtle Poké Ball motifs adorning various elements, and walls and curtains in bright yellow hues. Two Delightful Carriages
This special train comprises two distinct and thoughtfully designed carriages, each offering a unique experience. The first, known as the Communication Car, serves as the primary seating area where passengers can relax and comfortably admire the picturesque scenery passing by. The second carriage, the Playroom Car, is specifically crafted with children in mind, featuring soft play zones, a variety of engaging toys, and a simulated driver's cabin. This mock control station allows young passengers to role-play as train operators, fostering imaginative fun. Upon boarding the POKÉMON with YOU Train, passengers are presented with a special commemorative boarding pass, a tangible memento of their unique journey. The POKÉMON with YOU Train operates on the Ofunato Line, traversing a captivating route between Ichinoseki Station and Kesennuma Station. This approximately 1-hour and 50-minute one-way journey meanders through the stunning natural beauty of northeastern Japan, showcasing lush, green countryside vistas, rolling mountains, and charming small towns. The route offers a tranquil and scenic backdrop, allowing passengers to fully immerse themselves in the regional landscape while enjoying the playful atmosphere of the train.
Planning Your Trip
Generally, the POKÉMON with YOU Train operates exclusively on weekends and public holidays, though its schedule can be subject to seasonal adjustments. Due to its popularity and limited service, it is strongly advised to book your seats well in advance. While the Japan Rail Pass typically covers the fare, securing seat reservations is a mandatory requirement. These reservations can be made through JR East’s dedicated Joyful Trains portal, with tickets usually becoming available for purchase approximately one month prior to the departure date.
