Equitable Seat Allocation
A major overhaul in airline operations has been introduced by the Ministry of Civil Aviation through the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA),
with a primary focus on enhancing passenger comfort and ensuring greater transparency. A significant directive mandates that a minimum of 60% of all available seats on every flight must be allocated free of charge, promoting more equitable access to air travel for a broader segment of the population. Furthermore, passengers who have booked their tickets under the same Passenger Name Record (PNR) are now guaranteed to be seated together, with a strong preference for adjacent seating arrangements. This ensures that families and travel companions can enjoy their journey without being separated, fostering a more cohesive and pleasant travel experience for everyone on board.
Transparent Baggage & Pet Policies
Beyond seating arrangements, the updated regulations aim to bring clarity to other crucial aspects of air travel. Airlines are now required to provide more transparent and passenger-friendly policies concerning the transportation of sports equipment and musical instruments. While adhering to essential safety and operational protocols, carriers must ensure these policies are easily understood by travelers. Additionally, explicit and clear guidelines for the carriage of pets are to be published, removing ambiguity and making travel with animal companions smoother. These measures are part of a concerted effort to reduce passenger grievances and create a more predictable and stress-free travel environment across the Indian aviation network.
Prominent Passenger Rights Display
To empower travelers and ensure their rights are recognized and upheld, airlines must now prominently display comprehensive passenger entitlements across all their platforms. This includes their official websites, mobile applications, booking portals, and even at physical airport counters. Crucially, this information must also be communicated in regional languages, significantly widening awareness and accessibility, especially for those who may not be fluent in English. This directive is particularly vital in scenarios involving flight delays, cancellations, or instances of denied boarding, ensuring passengers are fully informed of their rights and the recourse available to them, thereby fostering greater trust and accountability within the airline industry.
Focus on Traveler Facilities
The Ministry of Civil Aviation is actively focusing on improving the overall passenger journey, recognizing India's burgeoning domestic aviation market. As air travel becomes more accessible, especially with the expansion of regional connectivity under schemes like UDAN, passenger convenience is paramount. This dedication is evident in the introduction of various traveler-friendly amenities at airports. Initiatives like 'UDAN Yatri Cafes' offer affordable food options, 'Flybrary' facilities provide complimentary access to books for leisure reading, and free Wi-Fi services are increasingly available. These enhancements aim to make journeys smoother, reduce overall travel stress, and contribute to a positive and memorable travel experience for millions of passengers.
