A Verdant Urban Sanctuary
Shakti Mohan's Mumbai dwelling is a breathtaking three-storey testament to her vibrant personality and deep connection with nature. The most striking feature
is undoubtedly the extraordinary collection of over 400 plants that transform the space into a lush, verdant oasis. This botanical wonderland, meticulously tended by her father, includes everything from towering Chiku trees to delicate hanging specimens, creating an atmosphere of serene tranquility. The sheer scale of plant care is a significant undertaking, reportedly consuming approximately two hours daily for watering alone. This commitment to greenery not only enhances the aesthetic appeal but also provides a calming retreat, a precious commodity in the bustling city of Mumbai. This verdant expanse is affectionately referred to by the family as 'Mohan Bagan', underscoring its importance as a communal relaxation area where they gather for tea, meals, and to enjoy the expansive sky.
Designed by Family, Filled with Memories
The design of Shakti Mohan's family home in Mumbai is a collaborative effort, primarily guided by her parents, reflecting traditional Indian aesthetics and patterns. The intention was to create a space that felt exceptionally cozy and elegantly simple, adorned with items that hold profound personal meaning. Among these treasures are a captivating dancing Ganpati statue, a thoughtful gift from the 'Dance India Dance' creative team, and a whimsical Dodo bird figurine from Mauritius, a special present for her father. Adding a touch of youthful artistry, a Radha Krishna statue, collaboratively decorated by Shakti and her sister Mukti fifteen years ago, stands as a testament to their shared creativity and enduring bond. These carefully chosen pieces, alongside mementos from her sisters' weddings and souvenirs from international travels to places like Tanzania, Georgia, and Scotland, weave a rich tapestry of familial history and personal experiences throughout the residence.
Heart of the Home
Upon entering, visitors are greeted by a welcoming foyer that gracefully unfolds into a spacious living room, serving as the central nucleus of the entire home. This expansive area seamlessly connects to other parts of the house, including a functional, modular kitchen, the private bedrooms, and the staircases that elegantly link the upper and lower levels. The living area is not just a passageway but a vibrant exhibition of the family's adventures; it is beautifully decorated with tokens and souvenirs collected from their journeys to various countries. These cherished mementos act as visual narratives, recounting tales of exploration and shared experiences. In this central hub, the family congregates, creating a warm and inviting atmosphere that encapsulates their shared life and individual stories within the comfort of their home.
A Dedicated Dance Legacy
As a celebrated dancer and choreographer, Shakti Mohan's home naturally pays homage to her artistic achievements. A distinct section is dedicated to showcasing a collection of trophies accumulated by the three sisters over the years, spanning accomplishments in sports, music, and dance. Of particular note are Shakti's iconic memorabilia from her tenure on 'Dance India Dance,' including the special MJ band bestowed upon her by Remo D’Souza and the coveted 'Sunheri Takdeer ki Topi' (Golden Hat of Destiny). These accolades are more than just awards; they represent the culmination of immense dedication, hard work, and a profound passion for her craft. This display serves as a constant source of inspiration, a tangible reminder of her journey and the milestones achieved in the world of dance.
Personal Retreats and Family Gatherings
The dwelling offers intimate spaces tailored for both individual relaxation and collective enjoyment. Shakti's former bedroom, located on the lower level, has been repurposed into a comfortable personal sanctuary. It features a bed, a sofa, and a television, complete with an attached balcony. This balcony once served as Shakti's serene practice space for yoga and a quiet spot for observing the city's hustle and bustle, particularly during the COVID-19 pandemic. The dining area is designed for communal harmony, boasting an eight-seater table that comfortably accommodates the entire family, including her sisters' husbands, fostering an environment for shared meals and conversations. These distinct areas, from the functional kitchen to the expansive dining table and the personal bedroom, contribute to the overall warmth and livability of the residence.
