A Humble Beginning
Kesav Suneesh, a 21-year-old from Kerala's Alappuzha district, embarked on an incredible journey to Everest Base Camp, a feat that defied conventional
expectations. His path to the Himalayas wasn't paved with wealth or privilege, but rather with grit and determination. While a full Everest expedition can cost upwards of ₹50 lakh, Kesav focused on a more attainable goal: reaching the Base Camp at 5,364 meters. To fund this ambitious endeavor, he meticulously saved money from part-time jobs, working diligently at a local vegetable shop and as a food delivery agent. These modest earnings, approximately ₹35,000 from the vegetable shop alone, combined with his delivery income, formed the financial bedrock of his Himalayan adventure. Kesav's story powerfully illustrates that significant achievements are not exclusive to the affluent, but are attainable through unwavering persistence and resourcefulness, proving that financial limitations need not dictate the scope of one's aspirations.
The Challenging Route
The journey to Nepal and the subsequent trek were far from a standard tourist experience; they were integral parts of Kesav's arduous test. To minimize expenses, he opted for budget-friendly travel, utilizing second-class train tickets and buses for his passage. His entry into Nepal was facilitated through the Sonauli border, after which he proceeded towards Salleri, the starting point for his trek on foot. The mountains then presented their true challenge, demanding immense physical and mental fortitude. Over eight days, Kesav navigated more than 132 kilometers, traversing through significant points like Paiya, Tengboche, Dingboche, and Lobuche, ultimately arriving at Gorakshep, the gateway to Everest Base Camp. His commitment to frugality extended to his accommodation and sustenance; he carried his own tent, slept in any available spot, and prepared his own meals to stay strictly within his budget. This entire segment of his journey was a profound testament to his resilience, where he faced the raw realities of distance, challenging weather, and sheer physical exhaustion, proving that his dream was being forged in the crucible of real-world difficulties.
Resilience and Restart
Kesav's grand expedition encountered an unexpected pause in January 2026 when he had to return home due to the passing of his grandmother. This personal tragedy could have easily derailed his meticulously planned journey, potentially marking the end of his Himalayan dream. However, instead of abandoning his ambition, Kesav demonstrated remarkable resilience. He returned to his work, diligently saved funds once more, and resolutely recommenced his climb on April 7th. This second attempt was imbued with a quiet strength and a renewed sense of purpose, making his eventual arrival at Base Camp feel like a hard-earned victory rather than a stroke of luck. His ability to regroup and persevere after such a significant setback highlights his profound dedication and the sheer force of his will, turning a potential ending into a powerful recommencement.
Discipline's Foundation
Kesav attributes a significant portion of his enduring strength and mental fortitude to experiences cultivated long before his trek. His formative years spent in the Scouts and Guides program at NRPM HSS in Kayamkulam, followed by his involvement in the National Cadet Corps (NCC) during college, played a crucial role in honing both his physical capabilities and his mental resilience. While these foundational experiences did not magically simplify the ascent of Everest, they equipped him with the essential steadiness required to maintain progress when the terrain became steep and the air grew progressively thinner. Furthermore, his journey offers valuable insights into the nature of ambition when pursued amidst challenging circumstances. It's an ambition that eschews ostentation, favoring instead a practical, patient, and deeply ingrained routine. Kesav didn't await ideal conditions; he actively worked, saved diligently, traveled economically, and consistently pushed forward, embodying a grounded approach to achieving extraordinary goals.
A Glimpse of the Future
Standing at the majestic Everest Base Camp offered Kesav Suneesh not just a breathtaking view, but also his initial encounter with a dream he is determined to fully realize one day. He is acutely aware that conquering the actual summit presents a significantly different and more formidable challenge, one that necessitates advanced mountaineering equipment, expert guidance, and extensive preparation spanning many weeks. Despite this, Kesav speaks with unwavering conviction, projecting the mindset of someone who fully expects to return. His current plan involves completing his academic studies, securing stable employment, and diligently saving towards his ultimate climbing aspiration. For the present moment, the mountain has bestowed upon him something invaluable: irrefutable proof that initiating the journey, even when the final destination remains distant, holds immense significance. At just 21 years old, Kesav has already accomplished what many only dare to imagine, demonstrating that dreams can indeed originate from the most ordinary of beginnings and ascend to truly extraordinary heights.
