Origins of BA.3.2
The BA.3.2 variant, affectionately nicknamed 'Cicada,' has been circulating discreetly since late 2024 and is now making significant inroads throughout
the United States. This new iteration of SARS-CoV-2, the virus responsible for COVID-19, traces its lineage back to the Omicron variant, which first appeared in late 2021. The key distinction of BA.3.2 lies in modifications to its spike protein. The spike protein is the critical component that the virus utilizes to infiltrate human cells. Researchers first identified BA.3.2 in Africa, and by 2025, it had begun its international journey, eventually reaching the U.S. shores. The initial detection in the United States occurred in a patient in December 2025, and since then, its presence has been confirmed in individuals and through wastewater surveillance across 29 states. Wastewater monitoring serves as an invaluable early indicator of shifting viral strains, although its effectiveness has been somewhat diminished by a decrease in states reporting data to the CDC since around 2022.
What Makes BA.3.2 Distinct
Viruses, including the one that causes COVID-19, are constantly evolving, and BA.3.2 is no exception. This evolutionary process occurs as the virus replicates within host cells, leading to mutations in its genetic material. While most of these alterations are inconsequential and disappear over time, some can confer an advantage, enabling a particular variant to spread more effectively. Potential Dangers of BA.3.2
Because BA.3.2 exhibits characteristics that make it less recognizable to the human immune system, it has the potential to infect a broader population, possibly leading to an upswing in COVID-19 cases. Despite its rapid spread, there is currently no evidence to suggest that BA.3.2 is more inherently dangerous or causes more severe illness than previously widespread COVID-19 variants. Nonetheless, maintaining protection remains paramount, especially considering that current vaccines might offer reduced effectiveness against this newer strain.
