Myanmar's Seismic Event
On a Tuesday evening, precisely at 9:04 pm Indian Standard Time, a significant seismic event occurred in Myanmar. This earthquake registered a magnitude
of 5.8 on the Richter scale, as confirmed by the German Research Centre for Geosciences. The tremor originated at a substantial depth of 55 kilometers below the Earth's surface, with its epicentre pinpointed at coordinates 20.51°N latitude and 93.96°E longitude. Following this initial jolt, a second, albeit slightly shallower, tremor was detected at 9:21:29 pm IST on the same day. This subsequent seismic activity occurred at a depth of 50 kilometers. Fortunately, initial reports indicated no immediate casualties stemming from these seismic disturbances. The geographical location and depth of these tremors suggest a significant release of energy within the Earth's crust in the Myanmar region.
Kolkata's Trembling Ground
The seismic waves from the Myanmar earthquake were not confined to its origin; they travelled considerable distances, making their presence felt strongly in Kolkata. Social media platforms buzzed with accounts from residents who experienced palpable shaking. Many took to X (formerly Twitter) to share their experiences, with one user describing how an entire restaurant in the Park Street area was observed to be shaking violently. This anecdotal evidence from various users corroborated the widespread nature of the tremors felt in the city. The suddenness and intensity of the shaking caused alarm and prompted immediate discussions among those who experienced it, with many questioning if others had also felt the ground move beneath them.
Broader Seismic Activity
It is worth noting that this event occurred in proximity to other seismic activities. Earlier on the same Tuesday, a separate earthquake of magnitude 4.1 had struck Bangladesh. Information released by the National Centre for Seismology (NCS) indicated that this Bangladesh tremor occurred at a considerably greater depth of 150 kilometers. The NCS reported on X that this earthquake took place at 04:06:46 IST on March 2, 2026, with its epicentre located at 22.84°N latitude and 89.01°E longitude. While distinct from the Myanmar event, the occurrence of multiple earthquakes in the region within a short timeframe underscores the dynamic geological nature of the area.
