New Sleeper Service Unveiled
Indian Railways is set to introduce a significant upgrade to its long-distance travel options with the recent approval of a new Vande Bharat Sleeper train
service connecting Bengaluru and Mumbai. This exciting development, confirmed by Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw through correspondence dated April 5, 2026, will establish a direct overnight link between Karnataka's capital, KSR Bengaluru Railway Station, and Maharashtra's bustling commercial hub, Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus (CSMT) in Mumbai. This initiative follows closely on the heels of the successful launch of the Kamakhya–Howrah Vande Bharat Sleeper, which saw impressive demand and high occupancy rates, underscoring the growing public appetite for enhanced overnight rail experiences. The Bengaluru–Mumbai route is a crucial addition to the government's ambitious plan to deploy 12 such sleeper rakes across the country by the end of 2026, aiming to bolster intercity connectivity and provide a more comfortable and efficient travel solution for passengers traversing longer distances.
Enhanced Travel Experience Promised
The introduction of the Vande Bharat Sleeper between Bengaluru and Mumbai is poised to offer a substantial enhancement in passenger convenience and intercity connectivity. Passengers can anticipate a modern travel experience, characterized by cutting-edge amenities designed for overnight journeys. The Vande Bharat platform, known for its semi-high-speed capabilities, is expected to significantly reduce travel time between these two major economic powerhouses, offering a superior alternative to conventional overnight travel. This new service aligns with the broader vision of Indian Railways to modernize its fleet and provide a premium, hassle-free travel experience. The success of the initial Vande Bharat Sleeper service on the Kamakhya–Howrah route, which carried approximately 1.21 lakh passengers in its first 119 trips with over 100% occupancy, suggests that the Bengaluru–Mumbai route will also be highly patronized by travelers seeking comfort and efficiency.
Potential Route Details
While the official schedule and exact timings are yet to be released, indications from within Central Railway suggest that the new Vande Bharat Sleeper service is likely to traverse a familiar and well-established corridor. Sources point towards a route that mirrors that of the Udyan Express, connecting Bengaluru to Mumbai via key cities such as Pune, Solapur, Kalaburagi, Raichur, and Guntakal. This strategic routing ensures that the premium service benefits a wider segment of travelers across these important transit points. The Vande Bharat network, which began its journey in 2019 with the New Delhi–Varanasi route, has seen exponential growth in popularity, serving over 9.1 crore passengers across 1 lakh trips. This continued expansion, particularly with the addition of sleeper variants, highlights Indian Railways' commitment to meeting the evolving demands of modern travelers and strengthening the nation's rail infrastructure.
