Heart Woes in Youth
A sobering revelation was made before the Haryana Assembly, indicating that a staggering 17,973 individuals within the 18-45 age bracket tragically passed
away from heart attacks or heart failures. This alarming data spans a period from January 2020 up to January 2026, highlighting a critical public health concern. The information was formally presented in response to a specific inquiry from a Congress MLA, who sought comprehensive details on these fatalities. The MLA's question also probed whether the government had undertaken any investigations to explore potential correlations between these deaths and COVID-19 infections or vaccinations, and if so, what the outcomes of such studies were and what governmental actions followed. This significant number underscores a growing worry about cardiovascular health among the younger demographic in the state.
Yearly Fatality Breakdown
The official figures shared with the Assembly paint a clear, albeit grim, picture of the yearly toll. In 2020, the state recorded 2,394 deaths due to heart-related ailments in the specified age group. This number saw an increase in 2021, reaching 3,188. The subsequent years also registered substantial figures: 2,796 in 2022, 2,886 in 2023, 3,063 in 2024, and 3,255 in 2025. The data extends into the beginning of 2026, with 391 deaths reported in January alone, bringing the cumulative total to 17,973. This progression over the years indicates a persistent and widespread issue rather than a one-off surge, emphasizing the need for sustained attention and potential interventions to address the rising incidence of heart problems among young adults.
District-Specific Trends
Delving deeper into the district-wise data provides a more localized perspective on the heart attack fatalities among the 18-45 age group. For instance, Yamunanagar district reported a consistent number of such deaths from January 2020 to December 2025, with figures standing at 387, 461, 375, 378, 410, and 389 respectively for each of those years. In stark contrast, Rohtak district showed significantly lower numbers, with only 33 deaths in 2020, followed by 41, 40, 27, 30, and another 30 in the subsequent years up to 2025. Gurugram also presented a different pattern, recording 113 deaths in 2020, which fluctuated to 105, 116, 114, 93, and 83 in the following years. These variations across districts suggest that the underlying causes or contributing factors might differ regionally, warranting tailored public health strategies.
No COVID-19 Study
In response to specific queries regarding a potential link between these concerning heart-related deaths and the COVID-19 pandemic, the government stated that no dedicated study or survey had been conducted. The legislative assembly was informed in writing that the administration had not undertaken any investigations to ascertain whether these fatalities had any correlation with COVID-19 infections or the vaccination drives. Therefore, the findings of any such hypothetical study, or any resultant actions taken by the government based on such research, could not be provided. This absence of formal research leaves a critical question unanswered about potential connections that might exist between the pandemic, its treatments, and the observed increase in heart issues among young individuals.
