A Shift in Scenery
Shweta Desai, a 37-year-old Indian woman, made a significant life change in late 2023 by relocating from London to Melbourne with her husband and two children.
This move, prompted by her husband's job opportunity, led to an unexpected career transition. Previously holding a senior leadership position as Head of Product for a prominent e-commerce website in London, Shweta found herself in a vastly different professional landscape in Australia. The job market in Melbourne presented considerable challenges, making it difficult for her to secure a role comparable to her previous one. This difficulty in finding suitable employment resulted in an identity crisis as she grappled with the loss of her established professional standing and the shift in her daily routine and social interactions.
Embracing New Roles
Faced with limited job prospects in Melbourne, Shweta decided to accept the first opportunity that came her way: managing Airbnb apartments. This role encompassed a variety of tasks, including the meticulous cleaning of rental properties, handling laundry services, and efficiently responding to guest inquiries. The stark contrast between her former life as a high-ranking executive in London and her current responsibilities as an apartment cleaner in Melbourne was profound. In London, Shweta enjoyed a lifestyle characterized by designer possessions, sophisticated makeup, and significant financial autonomy, reflecting a life of perceived success and comfort. The transition to Melbourne meant a considerable downgrade in her material circumstances and daily activities, prompting her to question her sense of self and value.
Redefining Success and Self
The experience of losing her high-profile job and the associated lifestyle led Shweta through an emotionally taxing period of disconnection from her true self. She described feeling like an empty shell, constantly prioritizing others' needs above her own and struggling to articulate her professional identity. The inability to secure employment in her field made answering the common question, 'What do you do?' incredibly difficult, leading her to adopt less fulfilling responses like 'I'm figuring it out' or 'I'm a housewife,' which felt like wearing a mask. However, this period of unemployment also unexpectedly facilitated a deeper self-discovery. Shweta realized that by shedding the external markers of her former career—the title and salary—she could finally uncover who she truly was beneath it all. This process allowed her to acknowledge and like the person she found within herself, independent of her professional achievements.
Money as True Freedom
Central to Shweta's narrative is a nuanced understanding of the role money plays in life. While acknowledging that money isn't everything, she emphasizes its crucial connection to personal liberty. For Shweta, financial independence translates directly into the freedom to make choices and live life on her own terms. She humorously noted that it means not needing to justify the cost of small luxuries like a lip balm. Beyond the practical aspects, money represents options, autonomy, and, at times, happiness. She candidly admits that she once placed excessive value on her job title as a primary component of her identity and ego, using it to mask underlying sadness or pain. Currently engaged in three different roles, including cleaning for Airbnb, Shweta is building a coaching practice and teaching English to children, demonstrating a multifaceted approach to her new life.
Building a Supportive Community
Inspired by the positive reception to her candid sharing on Instagram, Shweta has extended her message of empowerment by launching 'The Rebuild Room.' This WhatsApp community serves as a vital support network for women navigating significant life transitions, such as career changes, relocation, or shifts in personal identity. The community's growth has been organic, stemming from women who resonated with Shweta's experiences and sought connection. Complementing this community initiative, Shweta is actively developing a specialized coaching practice aimed at assisting women through similar transformative periods. She sees the community and her coaching services as interconnected, working together to provide comprehensive support and guidance for women seeking to rebuild and redefine themselves.
