AI Policy Unveiled
The Maharashtra Cabinet has officially greenlit the Artificial Intelligence (AI) Policy 2026, marking a significant step towards a digitally advanced future
for the state. This ambitious policy is projected to attract an investment exceeding Rs 10,000 crore, with the expectation of generating approximately 1.5 lakh new employment opportunities. A cornerstone of this policy is the establishment of six specialized AI Centres of Excellence, strategically distributed to ensure equitable development and access to AI resources across the entire state. Furthermore, five dedicated AI Innovation Cities are planned to bolster the state's existing AI infrastructure, creating vibrant ecosystems for research, development, and application of artificial intelligence. This initiative is designed to position Maharashtra as a leader in the AI landscape, fostering a climate conducive to both technological progress and economic prosperity. The policy aims to harness the power of AI for societal benefit and economic growth, creating a ripple effect across various sectors.
MahaChatur AI Chatbot
In conjunction with the broader AI policy, Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis recently launched the 'MahaChatur AI Chatbot,' a crucial tool designed to streamline the educational and employment pathways for the state's youth. This innovative chatbot serves as a unified platform, connecting individuals with vital resources for skill development, job prospects, and entrepreneurial support. Recognizing India's substantial demographic advantage, with 65% of its population under 35, the chatbot addresses the critical need to bridge the gap between industries seeking skilled manpower and young individuals looking for employment. Accessible via WhatsApp, this AI-driven assistant provides a comprehensive, one-stop solution for a wide array of needs. It offers information and application processes for skill training, alerts for relevant employment opportunities, guidance for aspiring entrepreneurs including market linkage, and support for assessments and grievance redressal, making it an indispensable tool for career advancement.
Green Energy Push
Beyond the advancements in artificial intelligence, the Maharashtra Cabinet has also approved a significant initiative to strengthen the state's capacity for green energy usage and transmission. This project, dubbed MAGESTIC (Maharashtra: Accelerating Green Energy and Storage Technologies Integration in Connected Grid), is designed to enhance the integration of renewable energy sources into the state's power grid. The project will be financed through a loan secured from the World Bank, underscoring its international significance and alignment with global sustainability goals. The preliminary project report has been formally approved by the Cabinet and will be submitted to the Central Government for further action. This move signifies a strong commitment to environmental sustainability and energy security, aiming to increase reliance on clean energy sources and improve the efficiency of energy transmission across Maharashtra.
Educational & Social Initiatives
In a series of comprehensive decisions, the Cabinet has also championed several key social and educational programs. To honor the architect of the Indian Constitution, Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar, during the 'Social Equality and Harmony Year,' a permanent Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar Chair will be established at the prestigious London School of Economics and Political Science. This Chair will offer Doctoral scholarships in his name. Furthermore, in a significant environmental effort, a special commission has been approved to oversee an ambitious campaign to plant 300 crore trees across the state, focusing on planning, implementation, and monitoring of green infrastructure. Scholarship amounts for students with disabilities pursuing higher education have been substantially increased for the first time in 12 years, covering a wider range of educational expenses. Lastly, 2.5 hectares of land in Ratnagiri district have been allocated for a new Kendriya Vidyalaya, enhancing educational facilities in the Konkan region, and the revised assured career progression scheme has been cleared for non-teaching staff in tribal schools.
