A Vision Forged
The creation of the Kataria Home, a 2000 sq ft 2BHK residence in Gurugram, began with the core principle of understanding the homeowners' unique needs.
Initially conceived as a minor aesthetic upgrade with minimal structural intervention, the project evolved significantly. Through the collaborative efforts of Vaishnavi Bazaz, Founder of Studio Navèe, several fixed partitions were re-evaluated and reshaped, leading to a substantial transformation of the home's overall ambiance and functionality. The design brief was guided by the distinct lifestyles of the two sisters who would share the space. The elder daughter, a frequent visitor from the Netherlands, and the younger daughter, an actor with a need for a camera-ready environment, both desired a home that was both a tranquil haven and an engaging space for social interactions. A critical requirement was the integration of a dining area that could adapt to various uses, serving not only as a place for meals but also as a productive workspace and a comfortable lounging spot. Ensuring a clear distinction between the communal living areas and the private sleeping quarters was also paramount to fostering a sense of peace and personal space.
Design Harmony Achieved
The renovation of this Gurugram residence, completed within a swift 2-3 month timeframe, saw the majority of the budget allocated to bespoke carpentry and custom-made furniture. The approach to spending was deliberately mindful and strategic, focusing solely on essential improvements. Initially, the dining space felt confined and disconnected, with a separate bar nook contributing to a somewhat fragmented layout. The post-renovation plan fundamentally redefined the flow and usability of the common areas. Upon entering, guests are now welcomed into a fluid living space that seamlessly transitions into the dining and bar zones. This interconnectedness enhances the sense of openness, while strategically positioning the kitchen and the two bedrooms on opposing sides of the layout ensures distinct privacy and a balanced distribution of space. This thoughtful spatial planning creates an environment where the home feels both unified and thoughtfully compartmentalized, catering to the diverse needs of its occupants.
The Vibrant Living Area
The living room emerges as a striking yet sophisticated space, immediately drawing the eye with a commanding mural. This artwork depicts a whimsical, palace-inspired landscape rendered in a soft palette of blues, greens, and blush tones, infusing the walls with narrative and dynamic visual interest. Complementing this artistic focal point, the furniture is intentionally understated. A generous beige sectional sofa is arranged around a uniquely sculpted, circular coffee table, while blue upholstered armchairs introduce depth and visual equilibrium to the arrangement. Overhead, a delicate, starburst-style chandelier adds an elegant shimmer, and warm wooden elements, evident in the gracefully arched partition and the TV paneling, serve to frame the entire space with a sense of cohesion. The room is further enriched with an abundance of plants, fresh florals, and soft textiles, culminating in an ambiance that is both inviting and exquisitely curated, perfectly suited for both serene relaxation and lively entertaining.
Elegant Dining & Bar
The dining area is a highlight, bathed in soft light filtering through the blinds, creating a warm interplay of textures and materials that exudes understated elegance. This space offers a visual connection to both the balcony and the living area, fostering an atmosphere that feels simultaneously open and intimate. A solid wood pedestal table serves as the centerpiece, complemented by sculptural green upholstered chairs on one side and a plush, blush-toned built-in banquette featuring cane detailing on the other. Neutral cushions add a layer of comfort and tactile appeal. Above, three brass pendant lights cast a gentle, inviting glow. The addition of striped Roman blinds with scalloped trim and a floral valance introduces a touch of vintage charm, harmonizing beautifully with sheer curtains that diffuse natural light. The adjacent bar nook, a fusion of old-world charm and modern sophistication, features a powder-blue console with delicate brass dragonfly handles. Topped with a light, marble counter, it is visually refined. A suspended brass-and-glass shelf displays glassware and spirits against an antiqued mirror, adding depth and a vintage allure. A chevron-patterned wooden ceiling detail highlights the craftsmanship, anchored by a sculptural pendant light, creating an intimate and elegant space for entertaining.
Serene Personal Retreats
The first bedroom offers a tranquil escape, layered with distinct character. At its heart is a soft, neutral-toned bed featuring a textured headboard, enhanced by deep green cushions and a distinctive shell-shaped pillow. Warm wooden details, including an arched partition and a cane-front bedside table, contribute to the room's cozy aesthetic. Beyond the arch, a charming nook houses a pink daybed, set against a whimsical botanical mural, injecting personality and charm. Functional elements like floating wooden shelves and a compact study desk are integrated seamlessly. Gentle lighting and sheer drapes soften the atmosphere, making it an ideal resting place. The second bedroom beautifully merges romance with refined elegance. An ornate upholstered headboard graces the bed, dressed in crisp white linens and patterned cushions. Behind it, a hand-painted mural of flowering branches and birds against a soft blue backdrop evokes a storybook charm. A wooden bedside table with delicate detailing pairs with a pleated pendant lamp, enhancing the intimate feel. A compact vanity with an arched mirror framed in blush upholstery, flanked by globe pendant lights, offers a playful yet sophisticated touch. Floor-length drapes beautifully filter daylight, and a fringed pink pouffe completes this serene and thoughtfully designed retreat.
