Facebook is introducing a suite of new features designed to empower creators and combat the proliferation of unoriginal and plagiarized content on the platform.
A central dashboard has been unveiled, serving as a singular point for creators to manage and submit reports concerning content that has been republished by impersonators. This streamlined process aims to make it significantly easier for creators to protect their work and take appropriate action against those who misuse it. While these advanced tools are adept at identifying and flagging exact duplicates of existing content, it's important to note their current limitations. Specifically, they are not yet equipped to detect or act upon AI-generated deepfakes that might leverage a creator's likeness without authorization. The focus remains on ensuring that original creators have a robust and accessible mechanism to defend their intellectual property within the Facebook ecosystem.
Redefining Originality
Meta has undertaken a significant revision of Facebook's content guidelines to provide a clearer definition of what constitutes 'original content.' This updated framework now broadly encompasses material that is directly filmed or produced by a creator. Furthermore, it recognizes the creativity involved in Reels that creatively remix existing content or incorporate overlays to introduce new elements, such as analytical commentary, engaging discussions, or novel information. Conversely, content that undergoes only minor alterations, like the addition of simple borders or captions, will be categorized as unoriginal. Such content, including re-uploads with superficial changes, will likely see its engagement reach diminished, as the platform prioritizes authentic creations. This recalibration aims to foster a more dynamic content landscape where genuine creativity is rewarded and superficial duplication is de-emphasized.
Impact and User Feedback
These proactive measures by Meta stem from a growing chorus of user concerns, with many users describing Facebook as an 'AI slop hellscape.' The company's response involves a concerted effort to reduce spammy and unoriginal posts while simultaneously boosting the visibility of authentic creator content in users' feeds. This strategic shift appears to be yielding positive results, according to Meta's own claims. During the latter half of 2025, views and watch time for original content on Facebook reportedly doubled when compared to the same period in the preceding year. Furthermore, a substantial crackdown last year saw the removal of 20 million Facebook accounts, which led to a notable 33% decrease in impersonation reports targeting prominent creators. This indicates a tangible improvement in the platform's content integrity and a more favorable environment for genuine creators.
Industry-Wide Challenges
The challenges posed by AI-generated content and impersonation are not unique to Meta; other major social media platforms are also grappling with these emerging issues. Just recently, YouTube announced its intention to broaden the scope of its AI deepfake detection tools. These enhancements will extend to identifying the likenesses of politicians, public figures, and journalists, reflecting a growing industry-wide commitment to mitigating the risks associated with synthetic media.
