Nature's Creative Muse
Nestled amidst the serene Himalayan foothills of Mukteshwar, Uttarakhand, a unique art residency known as Chitrashaala offers a profound sanctuary for
creativity. This initiative, driven by a vision to foster artistic expression, transports 53 international and national artists to a landscape far removed from urban clamor. Surrounded by majestic mountains, crisp air, and the tranquility of nature, participants immerse themselves in a week-long journey of painting. The residency covers all artist expenses, including accommodation, meals, and art supplies, thanks to the generous sponsorship of Ashish Vohra, CEO of jüSTa Hotels & Resorts. This supportive environment allows artists from diverse backgrounds – including Italy, Spain, Japan, and various Indian cities – to exchange ideas, learn new techniques, and draw inspiration from the breathtaking scenery. The Chitrashaala program specifically aims to provide a meaningful platform for female artists, empowering them to pursue their passion professionally and contribute to the vibrant art world.
Hotels as Art Galleries
The jüSTa Hotels & Resorts chain has pioneered a distinctive approach, transforming its properties into dynamic showcases for the art generated during the Chitrashaala residencies. With a collection exceeding 1,000 original artworks, each jüSTa hotel functions as a meticulously curated gallery. Art is not merely decorative; it is woven into the very fabric of the brand's philosophy. From guest rooms and dining areas to common spaces, visitors are surrounded by original pieces created by emerging artists. This integration of art creates a unique ambiance, enhancing the guest experience and providing constant exposure for the artists' work. Ashish Vohra's commitment, supported by his wife Deepika Govind, a fashion designer and arts patron, ensures that this initiative continues to empower over 500 artists since its inception, with the Mukteshwar residency marking its 12th successful edition.
Creative Immersion in Mukteshwar
The choice of Mukteshwar, perched at 7,500 feet above sea level, as the venue for the Chitrashaala art residency is deliberate. This peaceful village, known for its spectacular mountain vistas and pristine natural environment, offers an ideal setting for artists to disconnect from daily distractions and fully engage in their creative process. The jüSTa Mukteshwar Retreat & Spa, surrounded by dense forests, provides an immersive experience where inspiration is found in every corner. During the residency, canvases often spilled beyond the designated studio spaces, appearing on balconies overlooking the Himalayas or in spots that ignited a creative spark. Artists described how their work naturally adopted vibrant colors, influenced by their impressions of India. This environment fosters not only individual artistic exploration but also a sense of community, where artists, like Diptonil Chowdhury, emphasize mutual support and the vastness of artistic expression, recognizing that each artist possesses a unique style and perspective.
