From Seed to Oasis
Ravneet Kaur's gardening adventure began in 2019, sparked by a personal need to grow wheatgrass for her unwell father. This initial step blossomed into
a passion, leading her to cultivate an expansive green sanctuary on her 2,000-square-foot terrace in Ludhiana. Today, this urban oasis boasts an impressive collection of over 200 plants, yielding a diverse array of seasonal fruits and vegetables. Her garden flourishes with winter staples like cauliflower, broccoli, cabbage, radish, and carrots, transitioning to summer delights such as cucumber, bitter gourd, lady's finger, pumpkin, squash, tomatoes, and melons. This remarkable transformation was significantly propelled during the lockdown period, a time when she dedicated herself to experimenting with and nurturing various new plant varieties. Witnessing their successful growth fueled her determination to expand her cultivation efforts, drawing inspiration from prominent gardeners she followed on social media platforms like Instagram.
Cultivating Patience
Ravneet's initial foray into gardening commenced with a modest five pots, featuring easy-to-grow vegetables like spinach and brinjal. However, her early experiences were met with unexpected challenges, particularly with brinjal and lemon plants that took an extended period to bear fruit. This period of waiting, she explains, was a profound lesson in patience. She discovered that the more time and care one invests, the higher the probability of a successful harvest. Following these initial hurdles, she shifted her focus to planting zucchini and bitter gourd, dedicating approximately two hours daily to tend to her flourishing plants. Despite her academic background as an MBA graduate with a BEd degree, Ravneet found unparalleled peace and fulfillment amidst her thriving greenery. She readily shares her accumulated knowledge and practical tips with an online community of over 182,000 followers on her Instagram page, @haryali_by_cherie, offering guidance on crop cultivation.
Gardener's Four Pillars
Ravneet offers invaluable advice to budding gardeners, emphasizing readiness for potential setbacks like adverse weather conditions or pest infestations. Her core philosophy is to persist; she encourages newcomers to begin with the understanding that failure is a possibility, but not a definitive outcome. She outlines four key principles for aspiring cultivators. Firstly, 'Have patience,' as plants mature at different rates, and allowing them adequate time is crucial for reaping rewards. Secondly, she advocates for the 'Go 'desi'' approach, recommending the cultivation of indigenous plant varieties that are well-suited to the local climate and soil conditions, often available from local nurseries and communities. Thirdly, 'Grow what you eat' is a practical tip to ensure that the effort invested results in produce that the gardener and their family will actually consume and enjoy. Finally, she stresses the importance of 'Always grow seasonal,' explaining that planting fruits and vegetables according to their specific seasons—winter or summer—significantly enhances their chances of flourishing.
