Key Span Launched
A monumental feat of engineering has been accomplished for Mumbai's Metro Line 6, as an impressive 42-meter long steel span, weighing a substantial 168.96
tonnes, was expertly maneuvered into position over the Western Railway tracks at Jogeshwari station. This critical operation occurred during the night, between Saturday and Sunday, and marks a significant stride towards the line's projected partial opening in early 2027. Metro Line 6 aims to connect Swami Samarth Nagar and Lokhandwala with Vikhroli, providing a much-needed east-west transit corridor for the bustling city.
Navigating Rail Complexity
The placement of this vital segment presented unique challenges, particularly concerning the construction of pier P124, situated directly between the active up-through and down-through railway tracks. This necessitated meticulous planning and execution, with all work carefully scheduled during limited night hours. The presence of operational trains on adjacent lines, coupled with stringent safety regulations mandated by the railways, transformed the construction process into a high-stakes, precision-driven endeavor. Railway supervision was constant throughout the delicate operation.
Advanced Launch Technique
Following the successful construction of the necessary piers, the authority planned and executed the erection of the composite steel span between piers P123 and P124. A 10-hour railway block was secured to facilitate this crucial installation. The span, comprising multiple main girders, cross girders, and bracing elements, was lifted into place using two powerful hydraulic cranes, each with a capacity of 500 and 600 tons, working in tandem for synchronized lifting. The restricted space between active railway tracks made the positioning of these cranes exceptionally complex, demanding extreme accuracy and coordination.
Line 6 Progress Update
With the successful installation of this challenging span, the overall civil work for Metro Line 6 has now reached an impressive 87.7% completion. This 14.5-kilometer elevated metro line will feature 13 stations and traverse the east-west expanse of Mumbai, enhancing connectivity significantly. Notably, the line will also incorporate a double-decker flyover structure along with the Jointly Von-Karve Road (JVLR), further integrating with existing infrastructure and improving urban mobility.
