Exterior Design Language
The latest electric sedan makes its debut, showcasing a refined interpretation of contemporary automotive aesthetics. Its front fascia is characterized
by a clean, uncluttered appearance, accentuated by slender lighting elements and distinctive daytime running lights that serve as its signature. Below, a substantial air dam is seamlessly integrated into the bumper, flanked by vertical gloss-black accents, contributing to an aggressive yet sophisticated look. The broad front fenders further enhance the vehicle's athletic posture, hinting at its performance capabilities. From a side profile, the vehicle opts for a more conventional three-box sedan silhouette rather than the coupe-inspired designs prevalent among many electric competitors, a styling choice BMW describes as a "2.5-box" configuration. The body panels exhibit smooth, minimalist surfaces, complemented by flush door handles and elegantly designed alloy wheels, creating an overall impression of understated elegance and aerodynamic efficiency. The rear design maintains this theme of sharp simplicity, featuring slim, individual tail lamps and subtle black detailing at the lower section, rounding off a design that balances modernism with classic sedan proportions.
Futuristic Cabin Experience
Stepping inside, the cabin presents a vision of the future, characterized by its minimalist and technologically advanced layout. Many interior elements echo those found in the iX3, including a distinctively shaped steering wheel and an expansive 17.9-inch central infotainment display. A standout feature is the panoramic display that spans the width of the dashboard, ingeniously serving a dual purpose as both the primary infotainment interface and the driver's digital instrument cluster. Physical controls have been deliberately minimized to enhance the sleek aesthetic. The center console houses essential function controls, including a tactile rotary dial for drive selection. The car comes equipped with a host of premium features, such as electrically adjustable front seats, customizable ambient lighting, integrated wireless charging, Level 2 Advanced Driver-Assistance Systems (ADAS) for enhanced safety, and an advanced AI assistant. For an even more immersive experience, an optional 3D heads-up display is also available, further elevating the driver's connection to the vehicle and its surroundings.
Performance and Charging Power
This new electric sedan is engineered on the advanced 800V "Neue Klasse" platform, promising exceptional performance and efficiency. At launch, it will be available in a '50 xDrive' configuration, featuring a dual-motor setup that delivers a formidable 469 horsepower and 645 Nm of torque. While the precise battery capacity has not yet been officially disclosed, it is anticipated to be a substantial 108.7kWh unit, mirroring that of the iX3. This robust battery system enables a remarkable WLTP-certified range of 900 kilometers on a single charge, setting a new benchmark for long-distance electric travel. Complementing its extended range is its extraordinary charging capability. The vehicle supports ultra-fast 400kW DC charging, a technology that can replenish approximately 400 kilometers of range in a mere 10 minutes, significantly reducing downtime. Additionally, it is compatible with 22kW AC charging for more conventional charging needs.
Production and Market Entry
The manufacturing of this innovative electric sedan is scheduled to commence in August 2026 at BMW's established facility in Munich. Following the start of production, global deliveries are expected to begin towards the end of the same year. For the Indian market specifically, the earlier iX3 model is slated for an early 2027 arrival. The decision of whether the new i3 sedan will also be introduced to India remains to be seen, as the company evaluates market demand and strategy for its expanded electric lineup in the region. This staggered rollout plan aims to ensure a smooth and efficient introduction of the vehicle to various global markets, starting with its production hub and then expanding outwards.
