Fuel Costs Surge
Travellers looking to book flights soon should be aware of an upcoming adjustment in airfares, as Air India has announced an increase in its fuel surcharge.
This change, affecting both domestic and international routes, is a direct response to a significant rise in global jet fuel expenses. The new surcharges are slated to take effect from April 8, 2026, with select international routes seeing further adjustments beginning April 10. This decision stems from mounting cost pressures on airlines, primarily driven by the sharp escalation in jet fuel prices, which have nearly doubled in recent weeks. For instance, data from the International Air Transport Association indicates that average jet fuel prices jumped to approximately $195.19 per barrel in the week ending March 27, a substantial leap from about $99.40 reported in late February. It is important to note that even with these revised surcharges, Air India has indicated that the increased amounts will not fully compensate for the spike in fuel costs, meaning the airline will continue to absorb a portion of the financial impact.
Domestic Fare Restructuring
For those planning domestic journeys, Air India is transitioning from a uniform fuel surcharge to a system that prices charges based on travel distance. This means that longer flights will incur higher surcharges. Specifically, for journeys up to 500 kilometers, the surcharge will be ₹299. For routes spanning approximately 501 to 1,000 kilometers, the charge will be ₹399. Flights between 1,001 and 1,500 kilometers will see a surcharge of ₹549. For distances between 1,501 and 2,000 kilometers, passengers can expect to pay ₹749. Finally, for journeys exceeding 2,000 kilometers, the surcharge will be up to ₹899 per passenger, per sector. This new tiered structure aligns with a governmental directive to cap aviation turbine fuel price increases at 25%, enabling airlines to manage fare adjustments more predictably. The revised pricing model will be implemented across the entire Air India group, encompassing Air India Express flights as well. Importantly, passengers who have already secured their bookings before these new rates become applicable will not be affected by this change, unless they opt for modifications that necessitate a recalculation of the fare.
