A Coastal Gem Unveiled
Montauk, New York, is now home to a charming new boutique hotel called Hotel Corduroy, which officially opened its doors on May 8th. This establishment,
located where the former Sunset Montauk once stood, presents 29 distinct guest rooms designed with a clear inspiration drawn from surf culture. The hotel is positioned as a relaxed hub, aiming to foster a sense of community and reflect the characteristic independent and easygoing vibe of Montauk. Guests are treated to a property that features a delightful lawn overlooking the bay, complete with inviting fire pits, perfect for social gatherings. Adding to the allure, hotel patrons gain exclusive access to a private beach setup, providing loungers, chairs, towels, and umbrellas at the adjacent Sunset Beach, enhancing the overall seaside experience and offering a comfortable retreat after a day by the ocean.
Design with a Soul
Hotel Corduroy represents the inaugural hotel venture in New York for the hospitality group Blue Flag Capital, expanding their portfolio which already includes properties in Nantucket and Martha's Vineyard. The building, originally constructed in 1983, underwent a significant renovation. This transformation was a collaborative effort, with the interior design handled by Ward + Gray and the architectural preservation and enhancement led by Workshop/APD, who maintained the original three structures. The outcome is a space that feels both stylish and deeply connected to Montauk. The interior design thoughtfully incorporates elements that nod to the area's rich surf heritage, its maritime connections, and its inherently relaxed atmosphere. This intentional design philosophy is evident throughout the hotel, aiming to authentically embody the unique spirit of Montauk, setting it apart from other Hamptons destinations with its more vibrant, independent, and free-spirited character.
Community and Connection
A standout feature of Hotel Corduroy, and a key reason for Blue Flag Capital's interest in the property, is its central lawn area. This space is envisioned not as a typical nightlife venue, but as a welcoming communal hub. The intention is to create a place where guests can naturally congregate after spending time at the beach, before heading out for dinner, or even later in the evening. Unlike many establishments in Montauk that focus on attracting customers for a night of drinks or dining, Hotel Corduroy aims to serve as a secure and comfortable home base, a true haven for both its guests and the local community. This lawn is thoughtfully furnished with ample lounge seating, suitable for relaxed conversations, and features lawn games for lighthearted fun. Seasonal fire pits add warmth and ambiance, all while offering picturesque views of the bay. Furthermore, Blue Flag Capital plans to enhance this space with curated retail pop-ups and exciting brand collaborations throughout the year, fostering a dynamic and engaging environment.
Comfortable Stays Await
Stepping inside the hotel, the lobby is designed to evoke the feeling of an intimate living room, creating a cozy and inviting atmosphere from the moment you arrive. It features a distinctive vintage mid-century shelving unit and hosts a small retail shop. The walls are adorned with evocative surf photography, adding to the thematic ambiance. A notable design element is the wraparound banquette, inspired by the sunken conversation pits popular in the 1960s, encouraging relaxed interaction. Accommodations are spread across the hotel's three buildings and cater to various needs, ranging from the Beacon Rooms, which feature comfortable queen beds, to the more expansive Drifter Two Bedroom Suite. This suite includes a convenient kitchenette and a separate living area furnished with a sofa bed and a desk, providing ample space and functionality. Guest rooms are appointed with high-quality finishes, such as grasscloth wallpaper, elegant oak furniture, and reeded bamboo bedside tables, complemented by tasteful nautical-inspired lighting. Guests will also appreciate the premium Parachute Home linens, luxurious Salt & Stone bath amenities, and the charming addition of vintage cassette players alongside modern Bluetooth speakers, ensuring a comfortable and well-equipped stay.
