First Refurbished Dreamliner Lands
The first Boeing 787-8 aircraft, identified by its registration VT-ANT, has completed its journey and landed in Delhi. This significant arrival signifies
the initial stage of Air India's extensive fleet renewal program. The aircraft underwent a complete transformation, from its nose to its tail, at a specialized facility in the United States. This comprehensive refurbishment was executed at Boeing’s Modification Center in Victorville, California, where extensive interior upgrades were implemented. Following these improvements, the aircraft was then transported to San Bernardino, California, to receive a fresh coat of paint in Air India’s distinctive new livery at AeroPro, an FAA-certified paint facility. After obtaining all necessary regulatory approvals and certifications, the aircraft embarked on a direct ferry flight from San Bernardino to Delhi, traversing the Pacific Ocean. This milestone flight is a tangible representation of the airline's commitment to enhancing its passenger offerings and operational capabilities with a modernized fleet.
Strategic Fleet Modernization Initiative
This meticulously planned retrofit is a core component of Air India's substantial US$ 400 million fleet enhancement strategy. The overarching objective is to transform the airline into a world-class carrier, improving not only the passenger journey but also the overall operational reliability of its existing fleet. The widebody retrofit program specifically targeted the legacy B787-8 aircraft, with VT-ANT being the inaugural plane to enter the modernization process. It was flown to a Boeing facility in Victorville, California, in July of the previous year. The airline currently has another B787-8 undergoing similar extensive work at the same facility in the United States. Originally slated for arrival in India by October 2025, the delivery of VT-ANT faced subsequent delays, first to December of the preceding year, largely attributed to global supply chain disruptions. Air India's widebody fleet comprises a total of 26 B787-8 aircraft and an additional eight B787-9 variants, all of which are slated for various stages of modernization.
Cabin Innovations and Experience
The extensive refurbishment of Air India's B787-8 fleet, which is progressing steadily with an anticipated completion by mid-2027, introduces state-of-the-art cabin interiors. Passengers can now experience a refined three-class configuration, comprising Business Class, Premium Economy, and Economy Class seating. Each cabin has been outfitted with brand-new, ergonomically designed seats, promising enhanced comfort for all travelers. Furthermore, the retrofitting includes the integration of advanced in-flight entertainment (IFE) systems, ensuring passengers have a wide array of options for their journey. Beyond seating and entertainment, the entire cabin environment has been revitalized with new carpeting, modern curtains, updated upholstery, and revamped lavatories and galleys. These changes are meticulously aligned with Air India’s newly established product and customer experience standards, aiming to deliver a consistent and premium travel experience across its network. This comprehensive upgrade is designed to meet and exceed the expectations of modern air travelers.
Future Expansion and Competitiveness
Looking ahead, Air India has outlined plans to extend this sophisticated retrofitting program to a significant portion of its legacy Boeing 777-300ER aircraft. Beginning early in 2027, the airline intends to modernize 13 of these widebody jets, with the entire refurbishment project for this fleet segment projected to conclude by October 2028. This timeline, too, has seen adjustments due to the persistent challenges within global supply chains. The retrofitted aircraft are earmarked for deployment on Air India's key international routes, a strategic move designed to bolster its presence and competitiveness on the global stage. By enhancing its fleet with modern amenities and improved operational efficiency, the airline aims to significantly strengthen its international network. This proactive investment in fleet modernization is a crucial element of Air India’s broader transformation strategy, underpinned by a commitment to delivering superior travel experiences and solidifying its position in the competitive international aviation market.
