Humble Beginnings, Great Vision
Devni Devi, at the age of 59-60, felt a strong calling to contribute financially to her family. This led her to start a tiffin service from her own kitchen,
preparing meals for students. However, this venture was met with considerable skepticism and was often dismissed as 'chhota kaam,' or small work, by both her extended family and the community. Undeterred by the scorching Patna heat, which could reach nearly 50°C, she dedicated herself to preparing wholesome, home-style meals, akin to what she cooked for her own family, believing that students away from home deserved nutritious food. The positive reception and growing popularity of her food, primarily spread through word-of-mouth, soon became evident.
Overcoming Adversity & Growth
Having been married at 16 and spending decades managing household duties, Devni Devi found herself in a position where, despite her lack of formal education, she sought a way to support her family as expenses mounted. Her initial spark of inspiration came from observing the poor quality of food served to a medical student. This observation fueled her decision to provide better meals, initially priced at an affordable ₹20. The smallness of this endeavor was highlighted by dismissive comments from relatives, questioning her husband's earning capacity, which deeply affected him and led to a period of strained relations. Despite these challenges, her business steadily grew. The onset of the pandemic presented a new hurdle, with students returning home and business dwindling. However, Devni Devi adapted by shifting to home deliveries. Her genuine, delicious food helped regain traction. The turning point came when her son began sharing photos and videos of her work on social media, which garnered significant appreciation and boosted her visibility.
A Culinary Empire Built on Trust
Today, Devni Devi's culinary venture boasts an impressive annual turnover of ₹2.5 crore and provides employment to 15 individuals. What began as a modest tiffin service has blossomed into a recognized restaurant named 'Amma's Kitchen,' complete with a takeaway outlet. A particularly noteworthy aspect of her success is the unwavering loyalty of her repeat clientele. Remarkably, Devni Devi, who can only write her name and doesn't use smartphones or social media, has built this empire without a formal marketing strategy. Her family occasionally posts content online, but the sustained growth is attributed to the sheer quality and authenticity of her food. Her son, Durgesh, a communications professional, emphasizes that the core of their success lies in the unwavering commitment to quality, consistency, and honest effort. This philosophy has ensured that customers keep returning, proving that excellent food and dedicated work are the most effective marketing tools.
Empowering Others Through Example
Devni Devi's journey is not just a personal triumph; it's also a source of inspiration for other women. She actively encourages them to pursue their own entrepreneurial endeavors, often remarking to educated women, 'You are educated, why don't you earn for yourself?' She holds a strong conviction that financial independence is crucial for women, enabling them to support their families in the same way men do. Her restaurant is now counted among the top five most ordered places in Patna, reinforcing her belief that good work invariably leads to rewarding outcomes. Her son Durgesh shares with immense pride how his mother's life has imparted a profound lesson: that perseverance and quality in work are paramount. She has become a powerful example for thousands, demonstrating that age and background are no barriers to achieving significant success.
