The Ubtan Tradition
Dr. Madhu Chopra, a dermatologist and the mother of Bollywood star Priyanka Chopra Jonas, has shared a cherished family beauty secret: a homemade ubtan.
This traditional Indian face mask is what she and Priyanka have been using for years to maintain clear and glowing skin. Dr. Chopra emphasizes that she has largely avoided conventional soaps and face washes, instead relying on the power of natural ingredients. She believes that consistent use of this ubtan contributes significantly to her consistently clear complexion, free from common issues like pimples, acne, or pigmentation. Her approach is rooted in preventative skincare, and she happily shares this effective, easy-to-prepare remedy for others to benefit from.
Crafting The Natural Mask
The core of this radiant skin treatment lies in its simple, yet powerful, blend of natural ingredients. The ubtan recipe calls for two teaspoons of besan, also known as gram flour, a staple in Indian households renowned for its exfoliating and cleansing properties. To this, one teaspoon of malai, or thick homemade cream, is added. For those with dry skin, like Dr. Chopra, this ingredient provides essential moisture. Fresh curd is another key component, offering a cooling sensation and beneficial lactic acid, which can help combat the effects of sun exposure and contribute to a natural bleaching effect. A small pinch of turmeric, considered the 'secret ingredient,' is included for its potent anti-inflammatory and antiseptic qualities, helping to ward off infections, boils, and acne. Finally, cold milk is used to achieve the desired paste consistency, binding all the elements together.
Application And Results
Preparing the ubtan is straightforward: simply combine the besan, malai, curd, turmeric, and cold milk until a smooth paste forms. Allow the mixture to rest for a minute before application. This mask is designed to be applied evenly across the face, avoiding the delicate under-eye area due to its sensitivity. After letting it dry for approximately 15 to 20 minutes, the mask should be gently washed off. Dr. Chopra describes the outcome as 'exceptional,' noting that it imparts a beautiful, golden glow to the skin, particularly for those with a normal Indian complexion. She advises caution with the amount of turmeric for individuals with very fair skin to prevent any unwanted tinting, ensuring everyone can enjoy the revitalizing benefits of this traditional beauty ritual.
