The pilgrimage to the divine abode of Amarnath begins with a well-defined registration process, commencing on April 15, 2026. Given the daily capacity
limits, securing your spot early is paramount. Aspiring pilgrims have two primary avenues for registration: online via the official Shri Amarnathji Yatra website or the dedicated mobile application, and offline at over 500 designated bank branches spread across India. Regardless of the method chosen, a valid mobile number and email address are necessary for OTP verification. Additionally, a scanned copy of a Compulsory Health Certificate (CHC), issued on or after April 8, 2026, along with a passport-sized photograph, is mandatory for online applications. Offline registration operates on a first-come, first-served basis and involves Aadhaar-based biometric eKYC, with manual options available should technical glitches arise. A nominal registration fee of ₹150 is required per applicant to finalize the process. Following successful registration, pilgrims must obtain a mandatory RFID card from collection centers located within Jammu & Kashmir. This card is crucial for entry at key checkpoints like Domel and Chandanwari and necessitates biometric verification.
Eligibility and Route Selection
To ensure the safety and well-being of all participants, stringent eligibility criteria are enforced for the Amarnath Yatra. Pilgrims must be between 13 and 70 years of age. Furthermore, expectant mothers who are beyond six weeks of pregnancy are not permitted to undertake the pilgrimage. A valid Compulsory Health Certificate (CHC), authenticated by an authorized medical practitioner, is a non-negotiable requirement. Once registered and deemed eligible, pilgrims can choose between two distinct routes. The traditional Pahalgam Route spans approximately 46 kilometers one-way and offers a less strenuous climb, making it a suitable option for first-time pilgrims. In contrast, the Baltal Route is a more challenging, steeper trek of roughly 14 kilometers one-way. For those seeking to cover parts of the journey with greater ease, helicopter services are accessible on both routes, extending up to Panchtarni.
Travel Guidelines and Facilities
Effective planning for the Amarnath Yatra includes adhering to key travel guidelines to ensure a smooth and spiritual experience. It is important to note that bookings for travel typically close seven days prior to the intended travel date. The yatra officially runs from July 3 to August 9, 2026. Group registrations are permitted, accommodating groups of 5 to 30 individuals, with each permit specifying the chosen route and travel date. For any assistance or queries, help desks are conveniently located at various bank branches involved in the registration process. Along the pilgrimage routes, pilgrims will find a range of essential facilities designed to support their journey. These include temporary tent accommodations, medical aid stations equipped to handle emergencies, and provision for food and basic supplies. However, the challenging terrain and the unpredictable nature of the weather necessitate thorough physical preparation for all pilgrims.
