In southeastern France, a tiny Papillon named Lazare, celebrated for his distinctive upright ears, has passed away at the remarkable age of 30 years and
five months. Born on December 4, 1995, Lazare captivated many with his impressive longevity, sparking inquiries into whether he held the official title of the world's oldest dog. While the Guinness World Records had not immediately confirmed this status prior to his death, his life was undeniably a testament to canine endurance and affection. Lazare spent the vast majority of his years with a devoted owner, a bond that tragically ended when his caretaker passed away, leading to Lazare's arrival at an animal shelter.
A Surprise Connection
The circumstances of Lazare's arrival at the shelter were poignant; he was found by the side of his deceased owner. It was here that Ophelie Boudol, a 29-year-old mother, encountered the elderly dog. Initially visiting the shelter with the intention of finding a companion for her mother, Boudol found herself instantly drawn to Lazare. After spending a considerable amount of time simply sitting with him, she offered to adopt him, with the simple condition that he get along with her resident cats. This compassionate gesture led Lazare to his new home in Villy-le-Pelloux, where he became a beloved member of Boudol's family, joining her son and two feline friends, affectionately dubbed 'our little grandpa baby'.

Despite his advanced age, Lazare was characterized by his gentle and affectionate demeanor. At 30, his physical capabilities were naturally limited; he required nappies, had lost both his sight and hearing, and spent most of his day sleeping. Nevertheless, Boudol emphasized that Lazare retained a spirited and endearing personality. She often spoke of his charming nature, cherishing the moments spent with him in their home. His passing occurred only a few weeks after his adoption, a bittersweet conclusion to his long journey, with Boudol noting his peaceful departure as a reunion with his original caregiver.

The staff at the animal shelter were astonished upon discovering Lazare's age, prompting them to investigate his potential as the oldest dog ever recorded. They meticulously verified his birth date using two official registries and even submitted the documentation to Guinness World Records, initially as a somewhat lighthearted endeavor.
