Holiday Traffic Snarl
On Maharashtra Day, a monumental traffic congestion brought the Mumbai-Pune Expressway to a standstill, particularly affecting the Lonavala-Khandala ghat
section. Hundreds of vehicles, including those carrying prominent figures like NCP (SP) MP Supriya Sule, found themselves immobilized for extended periods. This severe bottleneck was primarily attributed to a surge in vehicular movement owing to the long weekend combined with the Maharashtra Day holiday. The confluence of these factors created an overwhelming demand on the expressway, leading to a near complete cessation of traffic flow. Commuters faced significant delays and disruptions, turning what should have been a smooth journey into a frustrating ordeal. The situation highlighted the vulnerability of the crucial arterial route to sudden increases in traffic volume during peak holiday seasons.
Reasons for Congestion
The gridlock on the Mumbai-Pune Expressway on Maharashtra Day was a perfect storm of logistical challenges. The primary driver of the extensive jam was the amplified traffic volume resulting from the long weekend coinciding with the public holiday. Many individuals chose this period for travel, leading to a significantly higher number of vehicles attempting to use the expressway. This surge, often observed during holiday periods, overwhelmed the capacity of the road infrastructure, especially in the winding ghat sections between Lonavala and Khandala. These stretches, inherently more challenging for traffic management due to their topography, become particularly susceptible to bottlenecks when traffic density increases. The combined effect of more cars and limited road space in these critical areas led to a chain reaction, resulting in the massive standstill experienced by hundreds of commuters.
