AAP's Strong Performance
In the recently concluded Punjab rural body elections, the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) demonstrated a powerful showing. Initial results showcased the party leading
in numerous areas, including Zila Parishad and Panchayat Samiti elections. Key victories were noted in districts like Patiala, Sangrur, Kapurthala, Ludhiana, and Pathankot. Specifically, AAP secured three Panchayat Samiti seats in Kapurthala and maintained a lead in Patiala. In Sangrur, AAP led in both Block Samiti and Zila Parishad polls. Furthermore, AAP candidates won significant positions, such as Harvinderpal Rishi securing the Dharamgarh Block Samiti seat from the Chief Minister's village, Satauj. These early outcomes indicate a significant shift in political influence across rural Punjab.
Key Electoral Battles
The elections witnessed closely contested battles in various regions. SAD (Shiromani Akali Dal) also managed to secure victories. For instance, Bibi Daljit Kaur Bhakna, a SAD candidate, won a Zila Parishad seat from Attari. Jaswinder Kaur of SAD triumphed in the Mehal Kalan block. Additionally, a SAD candidate won in Baluana village, illustrating the persistence of other political entities. Besides, the impact of independent figures like ex-gangster-turned-social worker Gurpreet Sekhon, whose group secured two seats in Ferozepur, added a unique dimension to the electoral landscape. The results highlight the complex political dynamics at play in the Punjab rural bodies, where multiple parties and individuals vied for influence and support.
