The Viral Deception
A shocking incident unfolded at Bihar's Katihar railway station, brought to light by a viral video circulating on the social media platform X. The clip
clearly depicted a vendor peeling cucumbers and then submerging them in a vivid green liquid before offering them for sale to unsuspecting passengers. This practice, reportedly carried out openly on the bustling station platform, immediately triggered alarms among many social media users, raising serious questions about potential health risks associated with consuming such produce. Cucumbers are a popular and affordable snack choice for many travelers seeking a light option during their journeys. However, this video cast a stark shadow, making people question the integrity of even fresh produce sold at such public spaces, and how appearances might be deceptively manipulated by vendors to create an illusion of freshness.
Public Outcry and Official Response
The alarming footage quickly drew sharp criticism from various quarters, notably an NGO named NCIB Headquarters, which shared the clip on X and vociferously condemned the railway authorities. Their accompanying post highlighted the alleged negligence, stating, “At Katihar railway station in Bihar, passengers’ lives are being openly toyed with. In the presence of hundreds of railway employees and dozens of railway police personnel, these women selling cucumbers are poisoning the blood of passengers, but the entire railway administration and police staff are sleeping with blindfolds over their eyes.” The post further underscored the responsibility for passenger safety and directly tagged prominent officials, including the Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw, Dhanbad Police, and the Railway Protection Force (RPF). In response to the escalating public outrage, Railway Seva acknowledged the situation on X, assuring that, “Related officials are being informed,” and confirming the matter had been escalated to the relevant authorities for immediate action and investigation into the concerning practice.
Investigation and Detentions
Following the widespread condemnation and mounting pressure, the Railway Protection Force (RPF) in Katihar took decisive action by detaining nine women who were allegedly involved in the questionable practice of selling cucumbers treated with the green substance. Reports indicated that the very woman prominently featured in the viral video was among those questioned by the authorities. A subsequent report from NDTV highlighted that an official, identified as Katihar RPF Inspector Vikram, stated that the woman claimed the green coloring agent used on the cucumbers was akin to the dyes sometimes employed in confectionery preparations during celebratory occasions like weddings. Authorities are now diligently working to ascertain the precise nature of this coloring agent and to determine if any violations of existing laws have occurred through this food adulteration practice.
Broader Food Safety Concerns
The incident at Katihar railway station resonated deeply with the public, triggering a significant wave of concern and discussion across social media platforms regarding food safety, particularly for travelers relying on food purchased during train journeys. Many users expressed dismay and a sense of betrayal, with one commenting, “They’re literally playing with lives of people, this is reason most of the people avoid buying from local vendors.” Another user questioned the vendor's awareness, asking, “She doesn’t even know what she’s doing is poisonous? And if she does – then should be arrested for mass poisoning Indians! Who gave her this idea?” This sentiment was echoed by others who advocated for extreme caution, with one individual advising, “Never eat or drink anything during a train journey, not even tea or coffee, except branded packed items. For many vendors, most travelers are one-time customers, so they often don’t pay much attention to quality.” The incident served as a stark reminder for many to prioritize safety over convenience when selecting food options during travel.
