The End of the Security Shuffle?
For years, the airport security process has been a dreaded but necessary part of air travel. The routine is familiar to everyone: unpack your bags, separate liquids and laptops into different trays, take off belts and sometimes shoes, and wait your turn.
At the world's busiest international airport, Dubai International (DXB), which handled over 95 million passengers in 2025, these queues can become a significant bottleneck. Recognising this, Dubai Airports is investing heavily in a technological overhaul designed to make the entire process “slicker, quicker, faster, and more convenient,” according to CEO Paul Griffiths. The goal is to eliminate one of the biggest hassles of travel and get passengers to their gates with less stress.
Laptops and Liquids Stay in the Bag
The most significant change for travellers is the introduction of new, advanced CT scanners for hand luggage. These machines use sophisticated 3D imaging, similar to medical CT scans, to get a clear and detailed view of the contents of your bag. This technology is powerful enough to identify items without you needing to remove them. This means that in the near future, the familiar routine of pulling out laptops, tablets, and liquid bags for separate screening will become a thing of the past at DXB. The new scanners are designed to significantly reduce processing times and make the passenger journey smoother and more seamless.
How the New System Works
The new security lanes are more than just advanced scanners; they incorporate smart design to speed things up. The system uses AI-powered software to help staff automatically identify objects and potential threats, making the screening process more efficient and accurate. This is combined with features like automated tray return systems, which prevent the usual fumbling for empty trays and keep the line moving steadily. The contract for the new scanners was awarded to Smiths Detection in May 2025, with the technology being progressively rolled out across all three terminals at DXB. While the rollout is gradual, Dubai Airports has confirmed that some of the new machines are already installed and operational.
Biometrics and Passport-Free Travel
Beyond the baggage scanners, Dubai is also a global leader in using biometrics to speed up the immigration process. The airport has been expanding its use of Smart Gates, which use facial and iris recognition to allow eligible passengers to clear passport control in seconds without interacting with an officer. An even more advanced version, known as the 'Smart Tunnel' or 'Red Carpet', allows travellers to simply walk through a corridor without stopping at all. As they walk, a combination of AI and biometric cameras verifies their identity against pre-registered data, completing the check in as little as six to 14 seconds. While currently in Terminal 3, the aim is to expand this passport-free experience, creating a truly seamless journey from check-in to boarding.
What This Means for Your Next Trip
The transition to this new technology is a gradual process, with new machines replacing older ones as part of a continuous upgrade across Terminals 1, 2, and 3. Dubai Airports CEO Paul Griffiths has stated the upgrades are part of wider refurbishments happening across the airport, including in Terminal 1 and Concourse B. For now, passengers should still be prepared to follow the instructions of security staff at their specific checkpoint, as the old rules will apply until a lane is fully upgraded. However, the direction is clear: Dubai is phasing out the old, intrusive methods. The ultimate plan is to replace all the old technology so every customer experiences the same level of convenience.
