It was a good starting point, but a starting point is all it was.

The latest consensus from major nutrition bodies, including reviews informing the most recent dietary guidelines, suggests a more flexible and often higher range for protein intake. Many experts now recommend a range of 1.2 to 1.6 grams of protein per kilogram of body weight for most healthy adults. For that same 70-kilogram person, this new range would be 84 to 112 grams daily—significantly more than the previous guideline. This isn't just about eating more; it’s about aligning intake with specific needs. The key takeaway from recent reviews is that context is everything. Factors like age, activity level, and health goals dramatically influence how much protein your body truly needs to thrive.
Your Age Is More Than a Number
Protein needs are not static throughout life. While children and adolescents have high requirements to support growth, needs change again in later life. After the age of 40 or 50, adults begin to experience age-related muscle loss, a condition known as sarcopenia. To counteract this, older adults benefit from a higher protein intake, generally in the range of 1.2 to 1.6 grams per kilogram of body weight. The conversation is also moving beyond just the total daily amount. How you consume your protein matters. Newer research shows benefits to distributing your protein intake evenly across meals throughout the day, aiming for about 20-40 grams per meal. This approach appears to be more effective for muscle protein synthesis than consuming the bulk of your protein in one large evening meal. Furthermore, protein quality—whether it comes from whole food sources and contains all essential amino acids—is a key consideration, especially for those on plant-based diets. Many experts recommend focusing on whole-food protein sources like poultry, fish, eggs, dairy, legumes, and nuts to ensure a complete amino acid profile.
