Recent reports paint a surprisingly positive picture of AI's impact on Indian employment. According to an analysis by Nomura, India is a 'ground zero' for understanding this transformation. The country saw approximately 83,100 AI-related hires compared
to about 31,921 layoffs linked to the technology between 2022 and August 2026. This translates to a net gain, with roughly 2.6 new AI jobs created for every one that was displaced or altered. The data suggests that rather than simply eliminating jobs, AI is sparking a demand for new kinds of expertise, particularly within the technology sector.
The AI Skill Premium
With high demand and a significant talent gap, companies are paying a premium for AI-ready professionals. NASSCOM estimates that India will need over a million AI professionals by 2027, but the current supply of trained workers is far below that level. This scarcity is driving salaries upward. Freshers with practical AI skills can command salaries 35-45% higher than their peers in traditional software development roles. For experienced professionals, the rewards are even greater. Expertise in high-demand areas like Generative AI can boost a salary by 25-40%. This has created a two-tier market where specialised AI skills are becoming a key determinant of earning potential.
The New AI Job Titles
The AI boom has created entirely new career paths that didn't exist a few years ago. Roles like Generative AI Developer, Prompt Engineer, and MLOps Engineer are now some of the most sought-after positions. A look at hiring platform data from 2026 shows 'Prompt Engineer' as the fastest-growing job title on LinkedIn in India, while AI-related job postings on Naukri grew 25% year-on-year in June. Other emerging roles include AI Product Manager, who guides the development of AI-powered products, and Computer Vision Engineer, crucial for industries like manufacturing and healthcare. These roles often don't require a traditional computer science degree, with companies prioritising demonstrable skills and project portfolios.
Essential Skills in Demand
So, what skills are employers actually hiring for? Beyond foundational knowledge of Python and machine learning, companies are looking for practical application skills. Experience with Retrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG) and vector databases has seen a massive surge in demand. Familiarity with applying Large Language Model (LLM) APIs is also becoming a baseline expectation across many roles, not just for dedicated engineers. Furthermore, as companies move from AI experimentation to deployment, skills in MLOps—the discipline of deploying and maintaining AI models in production—are becoming increasingly vital.
A Fundamental Shift for Workers
This new landscape presents both a challenge and an opportunity. The catch in the positive job numbers is that the workers losing jobs in routine tasks, like support teams replaced by chatbots, are rarely the same ones being hired for specialised AI roles. This highlights a growing skills gap. For the Indian workforce, from fresh graduates to mid-career professionals, the message is clear: continuous upskilling is no longer optional. As companies shift from a degree-first to a skills-first hiring model, the ability to adapt and acquire practical, in-demand AI competencies will be the key to career growth and security.
