Train travel between Tamil Nadu and Kerala is about to get a stunning upgrade. The Madurai-Guruvayur Express now features a Vistadome coach, turning a regular journey into a front-row seat to the magnificent Western Ghats.
A Window to Another World
So, what exactly is a Vistadome
coach? Imagine a train car designed for sightseeing. These special coaches, made by Indian Railways, feature massive glass windows, a transparent glass roof, and an observation lounge at the back for uninterrupted views. The seats are a major highlight; they can rotate 180 degrees, allowing you to always face the best scenery, and offer plush, executive chair car comfort. With a capacity for about 42 passengers, these coaches offer a more intimate and luxurious experience, complete with modern amenities like GPS-based information screens and enhanced toilet facilities. The goal is simple: to transform the journey itself into the destination.
The Star of the Show: The Sengottai-Punalur Route
While the entire trip between the two major pilgrimage centers of Madurai and Guruvayur is significant, the Vistadome coach is primarily for one spectacular stretch: the Sengottai-Punalur ghat section. This part of the journey winds through the heart of the Western Ghats, a region famed for its misty hills, dense green forests, and dramatic valleys. Passengers will be treated to views of waterfalls like the Palaruvi and Kazhuthurutty, and pass through multiple tunnels carved into the mountains. A key engineering marvel on this route is the historic 'Pathimoonu Kannara Bridge', a majestic 13-arch bridge built during the British era that offers a breathtaking photo opportunity. It's a slow, scenic journey meant to be savoured, and the Vistadome coach is the perfect way to do it.
Trial Runs and Booking Details
As the headline suggests, this service has been introduced on a temporary trial basis to gauge passenger response. The Vistadome coach will be attached to the Madurai-Guruvayur Express (Train No. 16327) from October 22, 2026, to January 15, 2027. This service from Madurai will run on Thursdays, Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays. On its return journey, the coach will be part of the Guruvayur-Madurai Express (Train No. 16328) from October 23, 2026, to January 16, 2027, operating on Fridays, Saturdays, Sundays, and Mondays. The response has been overwhelming, with tickets for the initial period selling out almost immediately. Fares for the full journey in the Vistadome coach are approximately ₹1,875, though prices vary depending on the distance travelled.
A Boost for Tourism
The introduction of this coach is more than just a new facility; it's a strategic move to boost tourism in the region. By connecting two major spiritual destinations—the Meenakshi Temple in Madurai and the Sree Krishna Temple in Guruvayur—the train already serves a significant number of travellers. The addition of a sightseeing-focused coach is expected to attract a new wave of tourists, including nature lovers, photographers, and families looking for a unique travel experience. Officials hope the service will highlight the natural beauty and engineering heritage of the area, encouraging visitors to explore nearby attractions like the Thenmala eco-tourism centre and the Courtallam waterfalls. If the strong initial demand continues through the trial period, there is a possibility that the service could be extended or made permanent.
